Chapter 42: I’m Close
Chapter 42 - I’m Close
Darian focused, now using his black power. Not long after, a pulsing black rune appeared. He felt the whole process, repeated it over and over, until he was sure he could replicate it outside.
Two hours passed without him even noticing.
Suddenly, the black world vanished, and he opened his eyes, waking up in his body.

No one reacted. They went through this training almost daily, and most of the time, their ideas didn't add much. But it was like climbing a mountain step by step. Eventually, when they least expected it, they'd be able to use something they had imagined during training.
Normally, everyone at advanced levels who added new layers to their blessings first created those changes through this training. That's why it was so important. The most powerful High Humans had always done it constantly.
Back in reality, Darian was the only one who moved. He raised his hand forward and activated his white power in a controlled way.
Everyone turned to him.
Slowly, white light gathered in a single point, then a pulsing white rune appeared.
'Niara fused with this without me even knowing how to do it... It was probably because our souls were connected through the contract. I think she really wanted to fight, her will passed to me, and my power moved to her instinctively. But... what are its real capabilities?'
Darian thought, running through possibilities in his mind. Then, he looked at the people in his group.
His red eyes glowed as he activated his curse. Their karma aura became visible.
Veyle and Leander had a more grayish tone, just like Lucy and Lucius. The others had a common black aura, but not as dense.
Maybe, if he placed the white rune on his allies, he could heal them from a distance? That seemed plausible. Darian just imagined placing that white rune on them, but he immediately felt a bad omen.
'That's not it.' He was sure. 'What if this connects to their karma? Maybe Rhea, since her karma is completely white and pure, could hold onto it? But Niara... maybe she's special because she's my Summoner, and her incredibly powerful Bloodline might have helped.'
There were more questions than answers... as always.
But if that was really the case, it would be easy to confirm without taking risks. He just needed to create a black rune and use it on an enemy filled with hatred—the results might make it clearer what the white one could actually do.
Darian nodded, and the white rune returned to his body, disappearing.
"You made progress with your blessing?" Harper asked casually.
Darian nodded. "Not sure, but I think I'm close."
Everyone sighed. This support never stopped surprising them.
"Let's start the battle training, then. But first, you need to know everyone's blessings," Harper said and began explaining hers first.
She was a fighter type, and her power was the Sonic Blade Blessing. Since she only had one ring, her abilities were still quite limited.
Basically, her blade vibrated at an incredibly high frequency, allowing her to unleash attacks that traveled through the environment just like sound particles.
Her slashes were insanely fast and lethal, capable of ignoring common physical defenses. However, using this ability required extreme control and consumed a ridiculous amount of energy.
That's why she only used this technique when facing an opponent directly—she couldn't keep it active for more than three seconds without completely exhausting herself.
Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to use it in the last fight. The moment she tried to get close enough to activate it, she was captured by the enemy, who already knew her power. If she had tried earlier, that fighter would've just burned defensive artifacts, making the effort useless and draining her energy for nothing.
Matteo spoke next. His power was the Vampiric Blessing. It was a simple and straightforward ability—whenever he damaged an enemy with melee attacks, his blessing activated, healing his wounds in proportion to the damage dealt.
As a tank, he could hold the front line indefinitely. As long as he wasn't killed instantly and could keep attacking, he was practically unstoppable.
However, to be truly effective, Matteo needed the right equipment and a lot of skill. He had to train constantly to maximize his damage output and avoid lethal hits.
If used by someone dedicated, and if he had the right support from his allies, he could become a terrifying force on the battlefield.
Veyle was the last to speak. Her power was the Magical Mist Blessing. Essentially, she could create a mass of mist, with its size depending on her will—the larger the range, the higher the energy consumption.
If she concentrated her mist on a single target and completely enveloped them, they wouldn't be able to escape on their own. As long as Veyle was protected and kept her focus, she could manipulate the mist to take them down quickly.
However, if external forces could interfere with the trapped target—like that artifact that shared power—the blessing's effectiveness would drop drastically. That's why Veyle relied heavily on her allies to make sure her technique wasn't neutralized.
Still, in a one-on-one fight, if she managed to trap her enemy, victory was pretty much guaranteed.
Besides its offensive use, she could also just spread mist over a large area. She was a mage, her blessing was focused on attack, but its nature still had tactical value. Inside that mist, for example, Raon could activate his blessing and become even more terrifying.
After Veyle finished, Leander returned with an energetic look.
"That bastard really wanted to pick a fight. But luckily, a lot of allies from other clans stepped in to help us. Raon didn't know how to control himself and caused so many problems that everyone was excited to see him suffer. We were within the rules, so they had no choice but to pay us."
"I wish I had a camera to record Freon's face when he just handed over all the cards from those five. Then, he even paid another 100 million. And his face turned purple when he gave the egg back."
Everyone took a deep breath, relieved. Freon wasn't crazy enough to try destroying or damaging that egg. He knew the Empire was ruthless with anyone who tried to act shamelessly or break the rules.
If he pulled something that dirty, even the people who hated Raon and his clan would team up and demand justice from the Empire. He'd then be made an example of, just to make sure no one thought they were above the law, preventing any rebellious ideas in the future.
Of course, he had plenty of connections to soften the blow a little. But he'd take so many losses and face so many problems that it wouldn't be worth it for just an egg that would hatch a beast slightly above average.
"My mother took the egg for analysis with the Empire's top support. This way, we'll be sure everything's fine," Leander added.
Then, he joined everyone and realized he was the only one left to talk about his abilities.
Like his mother, Leander was from the Mystic class. A rare thing, but perfect for leadership since he could fill multiple roles on the battlefield.
His power was the Chaotic Gravity Blessing. He could distort gravity, either in a large area or on people for support. But the energy costs were insane. So he used it in a much more controlled way on flying swords.
Basically, he could attack like a mage with his flying swords, use his power to support an ally, or himself, to fight head-on. He could also take on a frontline role like a tank, not by taking hits directly, but by controlling opponents and limiting their movement.
That was in theory. In practice, since he only had one ring, using his blessing on his flying swords was the only way he could fight for long periods.
If he tried something bigger, he could only pull it off once. However, there was always the possibility of creating combos with artifacts to expand his options, like in their last battle.
After the explanations, everyone got together to train physically with weapons. Harper was in charge of this, and everyone had to practice for emergencies. Darian had always wanted to learn how to fight with weapons, so he focused as much as possible on absorbing everything.
After that, the five of them gathered and headed to another building where they'd train in a battle against Zeal's group. That group had two-ring fighters. Not knowing exactly what blessings they had was a clan rule, making the training feel more realistic.
Nobody went around revealing their blessing—only their own group members knew. Of course, Leander's group had fought them plenty of times before and had some guesses, but they didn't know the full extent of their abilities. Plus, everyone trained day and night to learn new ways to use their powers more effectively.
Even though their opponents weren't using their rings, only their blessings and laws... it took just a few minutes. They got beaten down and defeated before Darian even had a chance to heal anyone. Not that he wanted to—using his power consumed something he couldn't easily recover.
And so, the day ended, another one came, and the cycle repeated.
Then another day, and another.
Until, finally, a month had passed.
Then, after forty days, Leander brought the news.
Their mission had arrived.
