Chapter 56: Couldn’t Pretend

Chapter 56 - Couldn't Pretend

Darian stayed quiet, feeling something really strange as he watched that shadowy creature kneeling in front of him.

"You can't talk?" he muttered, confused.

The figure lifted its head, but there was no expression — just emptiness, and those violet eyes.

Through the connection, Darian could feel it: this figure wasn't the same Primitive Beast from before. It was like... it had been reborn, or reincarnated.

Its body was exactly like a Spiritual Guardian's in the Divine Protection Universe — not entirely physical.

Its mind was nearly blank — it couldn't speak, and didn't really understand what was going on. But it knew Darian was its master and would obey whatever he said. And even without memories, Darian knew it could fight. It was like a reflection of its old life.

Darian was sure it didn't understand words, but the two of them could easily share intentions. "That might be a problem... but I think it'll grow over time."

He sighed and turned back toward the enemies. "Hope this helps me somehow."

That female silhouette was still silently watching everything. Darian took a step forward — and his new ally calmly moved right behind him.

Darian's clone gave a faint smile. At that moment, Darian narrowed his eyes. 'Wait... is that how I actually look? I look like a maniac... must be my imagination.'

"You finally pulled off the basics, huh? Let's end this. You won't get another shot." The female voice spoke, gesturing.

The clone scoffed, and his whole body lit up with a black aura. Darian watched it with full focus.

Then he finally noticed something: around the clone, there was a faint invisible layer that made the space around him ripple.

'That... are those the planet's natural laws?'

His eyes lit up. On Earth and in his home universe, the laws were so weak it was impossible to use or even sense them. But in other places, they surrounded everything — especially planets.

The natural laws were Water, Wind, Earth, Lightning, and Fire. All of them came from the mix of Yin and Yang, the two laws of life.

'That clone is twisting the wind laws... and his feet are warping the earth laws. Is that how he moves so fast? But how the hell is he doing that?'

*Wooosh!*

No time to think. The clone blurred and shot forward at insane speed.

Darian stepped back quickly — the black punch hit nothing but air.

He could sense the movements, tracking the flow of black energy. He could even predict the attacks the same way he did with the Risen. But just like before, he couldn't dodge so many fast strikes while being that close.

'Shit, help me out here.'

At his thought, the shadow behind him moved.

'A fake punch from the right, a kick from the left.' Darian processed it instantly.

If he dodged one, the other would hit. Even just the first would be enough to break a few bones. Darian didn't have healing power left, so every injury mattered.

But...

The shadow moved, and Darian got it — the two of them basically shared the same thoughts and senses.

By instinct, Darian stepped to the left, dodging the first hit.

*BANG*

A muffled sound rang out. The next kick hit his new ally, who absorbed it easily.

Darian's eyes lit up — their mental sync was perfect. His ally moved precisely without needing any command. Darian's near-premonitory senses were interpreted instantly.

On top of that, the clone's attack didn't really do anything to the new ally. It was like water hitting water — they just merged and canceled each other out. It felt like the black power and his ally's spiritual body came from the same source.

The clone moved again, striking with insane speed.

He was way too close. Darian could vaguely feel where the hit was coming from, but there wasn't enough time to think — much less move.

Yet...

*BANG*

His ally moved at an unbelievable speed and blocked the strike. Actually, it wasn't even speed — his body wasn't physical, and it was like he teleported to protect Darian.

'If I can sense the enemy's movements even a little, even if I can't react in time, this partner can react for me.' Darian realized, excited.

That enemy was fast, but he couldn't handle two targets at once. Darian had found himself a perfect shield.

The clone vanished in a blur, reappearing five meters away and stopping again.

"All happy just with that? Did you forget I weakened him to below your level?" the woman's voice cut in coldly. "You figured out the bare minimum to fight. I'll only count this as your win if you beat him in two minutes. Go!"

As soon as she finished speaking, the clone nodded, and a black and white aura surged around him at once. In that moment, small colorful dots started glowing around him.

'That... that's the five natural laws of the planet... he really can control them...'

Now Darian was sure. Which meant he could do it too — he just never knew.

The glowing dots pulsed and turned into multicolored orbs spinning around the clone.

'Shit, he's gonna fire from a distance in multiple directions, like some damn mage.'

Since it wasn't black power, this attack probably couldn't be blocked easily by his new ally. And it would come from multiple angles at once. Even if Darian pulled off a miracle and dodged everything, there was no way he'd win in two minutes.

"Fuck it."

Darian spat and focused on his two marks. They were empty — no black or white power left.

'If he can control the laws, so can I.'

He stood still. Running wouldn't help, so there was only one way to win...

The clone smiled softly — a smile that looked straight-up evil — and waved his hand.

A barrage of colorful orbs shot toward Darian like lightning bolts. It was a multi-elemental pure attack, and the destructive power made him break out in a cold sweat. That thing could totally turn his body to dust.

'Lucy, Lucius... Niara... I have to make it out of this alive.'

His mind sharpened completely.

Could he use his cloak? No way. He felt that maybe it would block it for a second, but then it'd burn through all the remaining power in his ring, and he'd get swallowed up by the blast.

All his will to live, to make it through this, pushed to the limit.

Everything he'd done until now, he'd done relying on his weird powers or trying to fake being some book protagonist.

He tried acting cool, being direct and aggressive. Tried acting distant like Niara... but strategy and acting weren't really his thing. He wasn't a total idiot, but no way he could pretend to be some master tactician.

Maybe if he'd focused more on his marks, studied the right things and tested properly, he could've figured this out way earlier.

He only chased general knowledge, hand-to-hand combat, and stuff that didn't help him here. Not totally the wrong choice — it was just the one he made. But making that choice meant missing out on others.

And only now... he felt both marks in his soul vibrate with his will.

The fact they were empty, with no black or white power left, finally let him use them directly. Before, he'd only tried using them with the ring's power, and after that failed, he just assumed they only worked with those two energies.

His eyes lit up.

A weird feeling washed over him...

He could feel the whole planet under his feet — no, it was more like he was *part* of the planet now. Around him, space started to ripple, creating waves in the air.

All of the planet's natural laws reacted to his will.

Then...

The elemental attack hit — but vanished without any explosion or impact.

It was like water crashing into a steel wall. Every element got completely canceled out.

"Hell yeah!" Darian shouted, hyped. "Kill!"

Right then, a shadow rose behind the clone. His new ally charged in right after the block. That clone had just attacked, so there was no black layer around him. If this clone was truly fair, his body should've had the same defenses as Darian's.

The black fist landed!

*BOOM!*

It was like a balloon popping, with a thunderous noise.

All the air left Darian's lungs at once — he let out a deep, involuntary breath of relief.

He'd actually won.

His eyes locked onto the female silhouette still watching everything in silence.

Obviously, it wasn't over. So he clenched his fists tightly — how the hell was he supposed to deal with her?
