Chapter 86: First class

Chapter 86: First class

The weekend went by without any issues, and everyone was now getting ready for classes on the first day of the academy.

Everyone was happy—all but one person, who was tense: Riven. He stood at the center of his room with his eyes on the system screen.

[Next Trial: 1 Day]

His trial would be coming tomorrow. He thought he had been ready for it, but now that it was close, he felt scared, unsure of what to think.

"I can’t believe it has been thirty days since I came here," Riven thought. He looked up into the sky, took a deep breath, and then walked out of his room.

Immediately after he stepped out, Noel was already there at the side of his door, waiting for him.

"You took your precious time getting ready," Noel said.

"I didn’t take that long. Let’s go," Riven said. He walked past him, and Noel followed. They made it to the lower floors. He expected to see some people there doing something—like cooking or just relaxing.

"There is no one here at all," Riven said as they walked past.

"That is to be expected. Everyone in this building is not just a student but the top of the top. They all have to ensure that they keep up their grades as much as possible," Noel said.

"That makes sense," Riven said. But he knew that wasn’t all. Everyone in this dorm saw themselves as rivals, and so they didn’t want to mix.

They left the dorm building and headed straight for the main building. They got in and found their class—1-A. Noel pushed the door and walked in. It was made in the form of a mini theatre or a university lecture room.

As soon as they entered, some eyes locked on them, their gaze cold and filled with malice.

Riven didn’t pay attention to any of that. He spotted a seat next to a girl—she had jet-black hair and eyes, a timid expression on her face.

"Let’s head over there," he said and walked to the seat beside her. He sat down, and so did Noel. Immediately they did, the girl looked at them and then almost jumped from fright.

She stared at the both of them with shaky eyes. She tried to stand up immediately to leave.

"What’s the issue? We aren’t going to hurt you," Riven said.

"Sorry—sorry, pl-please, I didn’t mean to sit with you," she said, retreating as she spoke.

"You should sit. You leaving immediately after you see us makes us feel bad, you know," Riven said.

She stopped, her face still apologetic. "I’m just a commoner, please. I’ll be in a lot of trouble if I’m seen with you two," she said.

"Calm down. You got into this class because you deserve it. No one is better than you in this class," Riven said.

"In the academy, there should be no class. We are peers," Noel added.

She was still reluctant, but she finally sat down.

"So, what’s your name?" Riven decided to ask.

"My name is Lily," she said, refusing to meet his gaze.

"I’m Riven Von Grave, and this is my brother, Noel Von Grave," he said casually. But when she heard the names, she froze up.

"What’s wrong? Did I say something wrong?" he asked, looking at her closely.

"Y-You both... y-you are the first rank, and he is the fifth rank," she managed to say.

"Huh? How did you know that?" he asked. She pointed at the front of the class. They both looked and saw a large list beside the board with names and their ranks.

"Shit," Riven cursed.

"I told you there was no hiding it," Noel said.

"Shut up," Riven said. He pinched the bridge of his nose before looking at the girl again.

"It doesn’t matter if we are first and fifth. We are still normal humans at the end of the day, aren’t we?" Riven asked.

"I’m sorry, but that’s not possible," she said with her head low.

"Huh? What do you mean?" Riven asked.

"Hey, get away from her!" Suddenly a shout came. Riven looked at the person that had yelled, and so did the whole class.

He was a boy with ash hair and abyss-like eyes. He leapt over his desk and rushed toward Riven.

"Leon, no!" Lily yelled, trying to stop the boy from coming close to them. But he refused to hear anything. He got there and grabbed Riven by the collar.

"What the hell are you doing close to her? Do you think because you are a noble you can force her to do what she doesn’t want to?" he roared at Riven, pulling him more as he yelled.

The whole class was watching at this point, trying to understand what the commotion was about.

’Shit, this boy better get off me if he doesn’t want to die. A commoner gripping a noble like this? Does he have a death wish?’ Riven thought.

He wasn’t thinking this way because he wanted to beat up the boy. It was simply the fact that this boy just placed a target on his back.

Nobles would fight against themselves and try to take each other down. But the one place that they always came together and worked together was when a commoner touched a noble.

They felt like it was an insult not to one, but to all—that a mere commoner would lay his hands on nobility.

And just as Riven had thought, cold glares pinned on the boy, and someone finally walked up—a red-haired muscular boy with fiery eyes and a frown.

He stood behind Leon and pressed his hand on Leon’s shoulder.

"What the hell are you doing here?" he asked. Leon turned to look at who it was. When he saw the boy, his frown deepened.

"Fuck off, this has nothing to do with you," Leon said. The boy suddenly increased his grip and with one hand, he threw Leon across the hall to the front. He slammed into the ground with so much force, he passed out.

"Know your place, you stupid idiot," the red-haired boy roared.

The class went silent for a moment, and then Lily rushed out, tears pouring from her eyes as she tried to get Leon up. She used all her strength and picked him up, dragging him out of the room, tears still pouring from her eyes.

The red-haired boy turned to look at Riven. He scoffed and then walked back to his seat.

Riven also took his seat, but his expression said it all. He didn’t like what had happened one bit.

"Get used to it, bro. Nobility will always look down on commoners. Normally, something like this would be reported, but if that boy reports it, it would be his word against the whole class.

And there is no way nobles would tell on their fellow noble for the sake of a commoner," Noel said.

"Honestly, I don’t blame anyone aside from Leon. If he had thought it through before attacking, he would have seen that nothing was wrong and this would have been avoided.

But regardless of that, I still feel some level of guilt for what happened. Let’s go check up on him after class," Riven said.

"Why the hell are you dragging me into it? Go visit if you want, I’m not going," Noel said.

A few minutes later, Sally walked into the class, and everyone went silent. She had a bright smile on her face; it gave off a warm feeling that welcomed everyone.

But Riven saw the smile of a devil and eyes that could steal a soul. No matter how he looked at her, he couldn’t remove that image of her from his head.

"Hello everyone, and welcome to your first class," she said happily. Then she picked up a piece of chalk, tapped it on the teacher’s desk twice, and then looked up.

"On my way here, I saw someone being taken to the infirmary. I could tell that there was already a fight in this class.

And a student was knocked out, and so I want to find out—what happened? Will you tell me?" she asked, but no one responded.

Seeing this, she smiled. "Not telling, are we?" She looked at Riven. "Rank One, you are the de facto leader of this class, so will you tell me what happened, or will you take responsibility for what happened?" she asked.

"Huh? Why did everything suddenly fall on me? Why the hell would she just decide to say something like that? Come on, this is unfair."
