Chapter 63: No More Collar
ODETTE’S POV:
When he walked in the room his smell hit me first. I was wrapped in a crisp pine forest.
When his eyes found mine, they locked on, zeroing in like I was the only thing in the world. My breath hitched. My body tensed up and I felt the heat rush to my cheeks.
He was so god damn beautiful. His golden eyes saw right through my every layer amd right into my soul.
Seeing him now, it felt more. Like my heart was lurching toward him.
The traitor.
The space between us became charged.
He chuckled breaking my focus, I didn’t hear anything he said, all I could see was him, looking at him took away all my senses, along with my reason.
I noticed everyone was leaving.
We were about to be alone.
I looked to Ariel with pleading eyes, but the coward just ignored me and shut the door.
Now it was just him and I.
Alone.
He came closer.
His gaze penetrating. Making me feel vulnerable and exposed.
He knew what he was doing. I could tell by that stupid smirk on his face.
He was murdering me with his whole, beautifully stupid face. freewёbnoνel.com
After last night, looking at him is completely different. I’m concerned about how I look, what I say, how I move.
I’m actually nervous about what he thinks.
Just when I think it can’t get any worse, it does.
"Hi." I say sounding as pathetic as humanly possible.
Hi? That’s the best I’ve got?
He didn’t laugh at me to my surprise, he just said "Hey, you." Back.
"Where did you go? Is everything okay?" I asked, trying to just start a conversation.
Why am I being so awkward?
"I had a meeting with council members from the pack. Everything is okay, at least for what’s been going on. I’ve assigned people to tasks, and depending on their performance, they’ll keep their jobs. This pack has been neglected far too long." He hesitated and ran his hands through his hair and exhaled with exhaustion "Plus Micca escaped during the raid. So that just adds more to my already overflowing plate."
I could see the tired lines under his eyes. The strain in his face. Even though his smile was real when he walked in. Fatigue hid behind it.
"You should take a day off after we fix the problems here." I said.
He looked over at me, staring into my eyes with those beautiful golden irises of his.
"We?" He asked.
Did I say we?
I sat awkwardly, not wanting to admit I said we, but I knew there was no denying it. My dumbass said it clear as day.
"Can I come lay down?" He asked nervously.
Did he just ask permission?
I paused, unsure for a moment. I was still wrapping my mind around everything that happened last night.
But I said "Okay." And patted on the bed next to me.
He walked over, his feet a little slow, like he was approaching with caution.
Then to my surprise, he laid down, placing his head on my lap.
I stiffened at the surprise contact, but I quickly relaxed and nodded, instinctively, I started running my hands through his hair gently. Soothing him.
It only took minutes before he fell fast asleep.
I kept rubbing his head and watched as his features softened and his breathing steady. His chest fell and rose slowly. He looked peaceful. I felt my heart stir and urge to kiss his forehead surfaced. But I resisted, I didn’t to move, fearful I’d wake him, disrupting his sleep.
Soon sleep found me.
I don’t know how long we slept together like that, when I woke up, I found him still on my lap, my hand still on his head, he was staring at me with such intensity, like I was the moon itself. It made my heart dance. I swallowed hard under the pressure of his gaze; heat came rushing to my cheeks. His eyes moved from my face too my neck. My breath hitched and instinctively my hand left his head and flew up to my neck, feeling for the collar.
It wasn’t there. I exhaled in relief.
A small frown appeared on his face, reaching for my next slowly and patiently. My breathing picked up.
"I don’t want to put that collar back on you."
AMBROSE’S POV:
I couldn’t believe I fell asleep. And how peacefully I slept with her. Her lap was soft, warm and soothing.
It wasn’t even sexual, it was endearing, the way I felt laying in her lap.
Her hand still rested on my head, I didn’t move because I didn’t want the warmth of her touvh to leave.
She was asleep. She looked beautiful, like a goddess in the flesh. Her skin glistened under the dim light of the room.
Her lips slightly parted, a pout just barely formed. Her lashes were so long. Her hair, still a mess, looked incredible. Even as she slept, I could feel the immense power building inside her. It concerned me, yet it intrigued me. I wanted to see more, I was starting to feel like touching the fire was worth the risk of getting burnt.
That collar will not go back on our mate. Don’t even think about it.
I wasn’t planning on it.
Her neck is beautiful, isn’t it?
Yes, especially without the collar.
Wouldn’t her neck look so much nicer with our mark on it? If you marked her, everyone would know she belonged to us. That she was ours. We could proudly display our mate.
I don’t think she’d go for that Onyx.
Won’t know unless you ask...
I ignored him. We weren’t there yet. Were we?
Her eyes opened. And she caught me staring, hardcore. But I wasn’t going to back down, I wasn’t ashamed at looking at her.
My eyes trailed back to her neck, and I felt the thought of claiming her resonate in me, and I kind of wanted to know what she thought about it.
The thought of putting the collar back on disgusted me.
The only thing I wanted on her neck was my mouth.
I saw her tense up and her hand left my head leaving the space empty and cold, and it flew up to touch her throat. Fear slammed into her face. I could see it clear as day.
I knew what she was thinking, she thought I wanted to put the collar back on her.
Maybe I should tell her?
Tell her, don’t be a coward. Even if she rejects our marking now, we will change her mind, Ambrose. She will let us mark her.
Okay, here I go. "I won’t put the collar back on you. That’s not what I was thinking about."
She relaxed and let her hand drop to her side, not putting it back on my head. Which stung a little.
"I was thinking that the only thing I want to see on your neck is my mark." I blurted it out like a nervous child.
She looked dumbfounded by my confession.
"You want to what?" She asked like she didn’t trust her own hearing.
"You heard correctly." I answered.
"You don’t mean that." She looked even more s surprise and a hint of questioning disbelief.
Did I mean it?
Well, my wolf certainly did.
And if I’m going to be honest with myself, the longer I looked, the more I liked the idea.
"Actually. I do. Ever since my wolf claimed you as his mate, he hasn’t shut up about it. He’s like a giddy puppy about to go on a walk with its master."
"Just your wolf?" She asked looking away. Her face dropped a little, expressing something just unreadable.
"No, maybe not just my wolf."
"I don’t know if I believe you. And if I did, and you betrayed me, you were just using me. I don’t think I can handle it. I don’t know what I’d do. I don’t think I’m ready to really think about crossing that bridge. I’m scared and confused. There’s a lot going on in my mind. Wars being fought between my feeling and thoughts. Logic and reason against my heart. It’s a lot to take in. This time as your prisoner, has changed my life, and even my perceptive on many things." She confessed, longing stretched over her face.
I could see the war that started brewing in her mind.
Her words hurt. But her rejection wasn’t about not liking me, but about not trusting me.
She’s not wrong to not trust you. She is right about planning to use her. And if she were to do to us, what she did to Ezra, I’d be very unhappy with the decision to reincarnate in you.
Yeah, that did look painful.
That is not how I plan on dying. I want to be old and tired with kids and my her as our luna by our side.
You dream big.
Dream big or go home.
I chuckled inwardly.
"If you aren’t flat out rejecting me, I can wait. I can show you the kind of world you deserve. Show you what life would be like, by myside. Marked by me." I insisted.
"I don’t know. Everything is happening so fast. I need time to think."
"I will earn your trust. And the first thing I’ll do is give you the collar to trash and destroy."
Her eyes went wide with surprise.
"I mean it."
