Chapter 99: King’s Return a Kingdom in Turmoil
Eric and Alina remained inside their assigned dormitory room for the entire day. The hours stretched on long and slow. The room was filled with a quiet tension a feeling of waiting.
Eric in an attempt to be useful to distract himself from his own anxieties and worries gave Alina the books he had brought with him from their kingdom of Estoria.
He encouraged her to study. He told her to prepare for the theoretical parts of the Academy’s entrance examination.
This was an opportunity that had so unexpectedly fallen into her lap a chance she never dreamed she would have.
Despite this attempt at normalcy at making things seem ordinary Eric found himself pacing the small confines of the room. He walked back and forth.
A knot of worry was tightening in his stomach as he awaited his father’s return. He replayed the recent tumultuous events over and over in his mind.
It was all too much to take in too fast. His mind felt overwhelmed.
Evening finally descended upon the Imperial capital. Long shadows began to stretch across the Imperial Palace grounds. Just as the day began to fade the door to their dormitory creaked open. King Noor entered the room.
The lines of exhaustion were etched deeply onto his face.
They were a clear testament to the immense stress and the whirlwind of activity he had endured in the past few hours.
Yet as his gaze fell upon Eric and Alina a weary but genuine smile touched his lips.
He was tired but he was glad to see them.
"I have taken care of all the remaining arrangements for both of you," he announced his voice tired but firm.
"Your fees for the Academy are paid. Your rooms are secured. And I have also decided that some of the Royal Guards who accompanied us here from Estoria will remain here in the Empire."
"They will attend to your needs and ensure your safety while you are at the Academy. The rest of the guards the larger part of our escort I have already sent back to our kingdom. They are needed there."
Eric and Alina exchanged a quick understanding glance. They knew what this meant. After hearing King Noor’s words Alina knew the time had come for him to leave.
She stood up from her chair. Her posture was respectful yet resolute. She was ready.
King Noor acknowledged her movement with a slight nod. He then turned to Eric. His eyes were filled with a father’s deep pride and a king’s earnest hope for the future.
"Eric," he said his voice resonating with a quiet strength a deep feeling "the entire kingdom of Estoria and I are immensely proud of you. You have faced great danger with courage. Give your absolute best in this Academy. Study hard. Show everyone here who you truly are what you are capable of."
He then turned his gaze to Alina who was standing ready.
"And Alina," he continued his voice equally encouraging "you too show them what mettle you are made of. Show them your strength and your intelligence. I have complete faith in both of you. The entire kingdom and I will be waiting for your return four years from now when you have completed your studies."
He placed a hand gently on each of their heads a brief paternal blessing a father’s quiet prayer for their well-being. "Alright," he said his voice softening slightly "it is time for me to leave now."
Eric struggled to conceal his own nervousness. He tried to hide the fear he felt at being left behind in this vast and unfamiliar Empire. He forced a smile onto his face.
He didn’t want his father to worry about him. Not when the King had so much else to bear so many problems in their own kingdom.
Alina stepped behind the King. She placed a hand gently on his waist ready to use her power. "My Lord," she asked her voice steady and calm "are you ready to depart?"
"Absolutely," King Noor replied his voice firm despite the deep weariness that was clear in his eyes. He was ready to face what awaited him.
And with that a brilliant white light suddenly enveloped King Noor. It was so bright it was hard to look at. In an instant he vanished from the room. He was gone leaving Eric and Alina standing in the sudden profound silence. The room felt very empty without him.
The scene shifted instantly.
Back in their kingdom of Estoria within the Royal Palace an atmosphere of deep crisis prevailed. Queen Annelise King Noor’s wife sat upon her throne. Her beautiful face was etched with worry and stress.
Before her stood Charles the Commander of the Royal Guard. His expression was grim and serious. Beside Charles stood Raven King Noor’s eldest son the First Prince. Raven’s condition was dire he was clearly in bad shape.
He was heavily injured his arm was in a sling and his face was pale from blood loss and the exertion of recent fighting. On Charles’s other side stood Leonard the second prince.
He also bore numerous marks of recent fierce combat. He had bruises and cuts on his face and arms and he looked generally exhausted.
"My Queen," Commander Charles reported his voice heavy with bad news "more than half of the nobles in the kingdom have rebelled against the crown. They have risen up in arms. If the King His Majesty King Noor does not return soon we risk losing a significant portion of our kingdom to these traitors."
Raven his voice strained with pain but still firm added his own report. "Mother, Leonard and I have managed to punish some of the rebellious noble families. We fought them in the South and East regions of the kingdom."
"However this came at a great cost to our loyal troops. We have suffered heavy losses in battle. You must make a decision quickly Your Majesty. Do we halt the ongoing investigation into corruption that Father started or do we try to continue it while simultaneously fighting these rebellious factions? We may not have the strength for both."
The Queen listened her heart heavy with worry. She thought of her husband King Noor and her youngest son Eric. They were both so far away in the powerful Empire facing unknown dangers.
The moment King Noor and Eric had departed for the Empire many nobles in Estoria had become bold.
They saw the King’s absence as an opportunity.
Perhaps they were even instigated encouraged by outside forces enemies of Estoria. They seized the chance to revolt against the royal family. The rebellion had initially flared up most intensely along the borders with the Roland Kingdom their longtime rivals.
The Queen had immediately made a very difficult decision. She had ordered to temporarily halt the kingdom-wide investigation into noble corruption.
She had to redirect all available loyal forces to suppress the dangerous uprising.
Everyone in the throne room was consumed by a palpable anxiety a fear that was almost thick enough to touch. The situation in Estoria was precarious. It was very unstable.
Suddenly without any warning a brilliant white light flashed in the very center of the throne room. It was so bright it momentarily blinded everyone present.
They all shielded their eyes. When their vision cleared when they could see again standing in the very spot where the light had been was King Noor. He was back. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm
The Queen upon seeing her husband her beloved Noor was utterly astounded. She had been seated on her own throne which was placed beside the King’s empty one. But she shot to her feet instantly her eyes wide with disbelief.
"Noor!" she exclaimed. Her voice was a mixture of disbelief that he was truly here immense relief that he was safe and a thousand unasked questions about Eric about the Empire about how he had returned so suddenly. Her heart pounded in her chest.
The King had returned.
