Chapter 70: Back Again

Raelynn stretched her arms above her head, appreciating the lightness in her body after days of discomfort. The once-ugly bruises on her back had faded, leaving only faint traces. It was amazing how effective Sloane's ointment had been. Every morning and night, without fail, Sloane had diligently rubbed it on her skin until the pain faded away.

Now, a week later, Raelynn felt like herself again. She sat on the edge of her bed, smiling as Sloane stood in front of her, holding her medical bag with a triumphant grin.

"Congratulations, Miss Moore," Sloane said with a grin. "You're officially fine and healed now, and my first task is a success!"

"Are you sure about that?" Elion's voice cut through the room, calm but skeptical.

Raelynn turned her head to see him standing near the door, his arms crossed tightly across his chest. His sharp gaze flicked between Sloane and Raelynn, as if daring either of them to argue otherwise. Hera stood next to him, standing there relaxed and casual, her lips curved into an amused smile as she observed the exchange.

Sloane raised a brow and placed a hand on her hip. "Oh, I'm sure, Mr. Vaelorian," she replied, laying on the fake politeness. "I'd say I'm 90% sure that you're 100% doubting my skills right now."

Hera let out a soft laugh, and Raelynn couldn't help but giggle. "I'm fine, Elion. Look!" She stood up from the bed and gave a playful spin, twirling like a child showing off a new dress. "Ta-da!" she said with a wide smile, throwing her arms out dramatically.

Elion's eyes narrowed slightly, but there was a hint of amusement in his expression. "Fine, then," he said shortly, sounding like he wasn't totally on board.

Raelynn studied him for a moment, feeling an unexpected pang of sadness. She was happy—ecstatic, even—that she was all better now, yet she couldn't shake the bittersweet feeling deep down.

Over the past week, Elion had been... paying her a lot of attention.

He'd checked on her frequently, sometimes sitting by her bedside in quiet moments, making sure she was comfortable. It was something she'd never expected from him, and now the idea of losing that care felt strangely empty.

What am I thinking? she scolded herself, shaking her head slightly and pressing her fingers to her temple.

His gaze hardened, catching what she did. "Is that what you call being fine?"

Sloane shrugged and waved him off. "Relax, Elion. She's fine. Probably just stuck in her head again, overthinking like everyone else, which, by the way, I've told her not to do."

Elion didn't respond, but his gaze lingered on Raelynn for a moment longer before he turned and left the room. Hera followed him, offering a quick wink to Raelynn as she closed the door behind her.

Raelynn let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. Sloane leaned in closer, her voice hushed like she was telling a secret. "You know, he's not going to stop worrying about you anytime soon."

Raelynn rolled her eyes, though her lips twitched into a smile. "I'll believe it when I see it."

The moment Sloane walked out, Raelynn's smile disappeared. "How the heck did she guess what I was thinking?!"

That night, after dinner, Raelynn found herself back in her room with a small bowl of sliced fruit in her hands after dinner. The fresh strawberries and juicy melon had looked too tempting to pass up. She carried the bowl carefully as she walked to the balcony, pushing the glass door open and stepping out into the cool evening air.

The sky was quiet and dark, the sky a mix of dark blue and black, dotted with stars. A light breeze stirred the leaves, their sound blending with the quiet chirps of crickets.

Raelynn settled into the cushioned chair by the railing, setting the bowl on her lap and picking up a piece of melon. She popped it into her mouth, savoring the sweet, refreshing taste.

Her moment of peace was cut short by the sound of wings flapping nearby. She froze, her eyes darting toward the source of the noise. There, hovering just above the railing, was a bat. Its tiny, dark wings fluttered as it drew nearer, settling on the railing with surprising elegance.

Raelynn gasped softly, her heart skipping a beat. "Oh, you're back again," she said quietly, sounding both surprised and a little uneasy.

The bat tilted its head, its tiny black eyes glinting in the moonlight as it stared at her. Raelynn felt her muscles tense, her mind racing. Don't make any sudden movements, she told herself. Slowly, she rose from her chair, clutching the fruit bowl tightly as if it were a shield.

She moved cautiously toward the balcony door, each step slow and steady. The bat remained still, its gaze following her every step. When she finally reached the door, she slipped inside and closed it quickly but quietly, letting out a relieved sigh as the glass pane sealed her away from the unexpected visitor.

From inside, she watched as the bat shifted, crawling along the railing before settling down. It didn't seem threatening—just curious. Raelynn's initial fear began to fade, replaced by a twinge of guilt.

"Maybe you're hungry," she whispered to herself, glancing down at the bowl in her hands. She hesitated for a moment before opening the door just wide enough to set a piece of melon on the balcony floor. Quickly, she closed the door again and pulled the curtain across it.

"There," she said softly, more to herself than the bat. "Enjoy."

She gave the bat's shadowy figure one last look through the curtain before crawling into bed, still thinking about it. She didn't know why, but something about the bat felt... different. Almost as if it were watching over her.

She shook her head at the thought, letting out a soft laugh. "I must be imagining things."

Unbeknownst to Raelynn, the bat remained just outside the window, its dark silhouette blending seamlessly into the shadows of the night. Its head tilted slightly, the gleam of its eyes fixed on her even as she turned away.
