Chapter 72: Breakfast Plans
Raelynn sat at her usual spot in the dining room, nibbling on a piece of toast and trying to appear normal. Across from her, Elion was reading something on his phone. Sloane, as usual, was chatting away, breaking through the calm like she always did.
Despite the seemingly ordinary routine, Raelynn felt a tension brewing within her. She couldn't stop thinking about everything that had happened the night before. She chewed slowly, her eyes drifting to the plate of scrambled eggs in front of her, but she wasn't really paying attention to the food. Instead, her thoughts raced back to the secret door she'd discovered behind Elion's bookshelf.

What's inside it? she wondered, her curiosity gnawing at her like an itch she couldn't scratch. She'd come so close to going inside, but at the last second, she'd chickened out.
Raelynn mentally cringed at herself. I'm not one of those stupid girls in horror movies who just stand there and get caught. No way. It was dark, and Elion was probably around, just waiting to catch me and scold me.
Her lips twitched upward in a small, self-amused smile as she thought about sneaking back in. I just have to wait for the right time. When Elion isn't home, and I'm ready—with supplies and maybe a weapon or two, just in case.
Her smile widened as she imagined herself like one of those adventurous heroines in the movies, bravely venturing into the unknown. She almost laughed aloud at the thought, but she quickly schooled her expression when Elion glanced up from his phone.
"Something funny?" he asked, his sharp eyes narrowing slightly as he studied her.
Raelynn shook her head quickly, her face warming with embarrassment. "No, no. Just... thinking about something."
Elion raised an eyebrow but didn't press further, turning back to his phone.
Raelynn took another bite of her toast, her heart racing. Okay, focus. Act normal. Clearing her throat, she spoke up, her tone softer than usual. "Elion?"
"Hm?" He didn't look up this time, his attention still fixed on whatever he was reading.
"What are you doing today?"
Elion finally set his phone down, his dark eyes meeting hers with a hint of suspicion. "Why do you want to know?"
Raelynn's pulse quickened under his gaze, but she forced herself to keep calm, even tilting her head in an attempt to look casual. "Just curious," she replied, shrugging. "I mean, you always seem busy."
His stare lingered for a moment longer, as if he was trying to read her mind, before he answered. "Work, as usual."
Raelynn nodded, her thoughts racing again. Work. Perfect. Hope he's out working late then I'll have time to go back to that office and explore. She mentally patted herself on the back for her cleverness but kept her face neutral.
But Elion wasn't done. "You've never been interested in my schedule before," he said. "Why now?"
Raelynn stiffened, her fork clinking softly against her plate. She hadn't anticipated him questioning her like this. "Oh, um..."
Before she could think of a convincing excuse, Sloane chimed in, grinning mischievously. "She just wants to know what her baby daddy is up to."
Raelynn whipped her head toward Sloane, her cheeks flaming. "I do not!" she protested, her voice higher than she intended.
Sloane laughed, clearly enjoying her embarrassment. "Oh, come on, Raelynn. Don't be shy. You probably want to fix him a nice dinner, wait for him to come home, maybe even draw him a bath."
Raelynn's mouth fell open in shock, and she shook her head vehemently. "What? No! That's not—"
Elion's gaze flicked between the two of them, his lips curving into the faintest hint of a smirk. "Sure, if you say so," he said flatly.
Raelynn groaned, covering her face with her hands. "Sloane, stop putting ideas into his head!"
Sloane leaned back in his chair, looking entirely too pleased with himself. "I'm just saying, you'd make a great little housewife."
Raelynn peeked through her fingers, shooting him a glare. "Not even worth a reply."
Elion chuckled softly, his deep voice sending a shiver down her spine. "You're quite lively this morning," he remarked, his eyes sparkling with amusement.
Raelynn dropped her hands and huffed, trying to regain her composure. "I'm just trying to have a normal conversation," she muttered, stabbing at her eggs with her fork.
Elion's smirk lingered as he returned to his meal, but Raelynn couldn't shake the feeling that he was still watching her out of the corner of his eye.
Great, she thought, her appetite fading. Now he's suspicious. Thanks a lot, Sloane.
The rest of breakfast passed with Raelynn keeping her head down, determined not to say anything else that might give away her true intentions.
As the meal ended and Elion stood to leave, Raelynn glanced up at him. "Have a good day," she said, her tone as neutral as she could manage.
Elion paused, his gaze lingering on her for a moment before he nodded. "You too."
As he walked away, Raelynn couldn't help but feel a mix of relief and anticipation. Now I just have to wait for the perfect opportunity.
But as she turned back to clear her plate, she caught Sloane giving her a knowing look.
"What?" she asked, narrowing her eyes.
Sloane just grinned. "Oh, nothing. Just... good luck with whatever you're scheming."
Raelynn's stomach dropped. Did she know? No, she couldn't possibly know. Could she?
Her mind raced as she tried to play it cool. "I'm not scheming anything," she insisted, though her tone faltered a little.
"Sure you're not," Sloane said, his grin widening.
Raelynn glared at him, but her heart was pounding. She was suddenly very aware of how much Sloane observed, and it made her wonder if she'd been more obvious than she thought.
She walked her plate to the sink, her brain already working overtime on plans. But one thing was clear—she'd have to be extra careful if she wanted to pull this off.
