Chapter 441
"Monster! Monster!"
He pointed in one direction, screaming with terror plastered across his face.
It was as if he had seen something horrifying.
Everyone froze on the spot.
Had they already reached their final destination?
Yun Xiaoxiao frowned slightly.
In her spiritual perception, there were no other living beings nearby.
Yet Uncle Tu'er's state was clearly abnormal.
The convoy came to a halt.
Abu tried his best to calm the old man down.
But Uncle Tu'er was like a man possessed, frantically running back the way they had come, refusing to take another step forward, let alone point them in the right direction.
To stabilize Uncle Tu'er's nerves—and to avoid alerting any potential threats—Yun Xiaoxiao suggested splitting into two teams.
The majority would stay behind as backup.
She, Lu Chen, and a few others would scout ahead to assess the situation.
Once the groups were decided, Yun Xiaoxiao, Lu Chen, Han Bing, and Liu Xiaohui set off lightly equipped, moving cautiously forward.
Under Yun Xiaoxiao's lead, the four of them teleported in short bursts.
Each time they landed, they would immediately scan for danger before teleporting again.
After advancing roughly three kilometers, the sight before them left them stunned.
There, in the middle of the barren wasteland, lay an enormous crater.
It was the size of a football field.
The pit was a gruesome mess—dried blood, scattered bones, feces, and other debris littered the ground.
It looked like a hellish slaughterhouse.
Yet, aside from the carnage, it was empty. No people, no zombies.
"Look over there—so many footprints!" Liu Xiaohui pointed toward the opposite edge of the crater.
A set of crude steps led from the pit’s bottom up to the sandy surface.
Both the steps and the surrounding sand were covered in countless footprints.
Though some had been partially buried by the shifting sands, the sheer volume was unmistakable.
It looked as though tens of thousands of feet had trampled through.
But something was off about the prints.
They resembled human footprints, yet there was something unsettlingly unnatural about them.
"Uncle Tu'er must have been talking about this place," Han Bing said, studying the marks. "These were left by the skeletal zombies."
"But where did they go?" Liu Xiaohui wondered aloud.
Yun Xiaoxiao lifted her gaze, following the trail where the footprints faded into the distance. "Let’s follow them."
They tracked the lingering prints, moving cautiously.
This time, Yun Xiaoxiao avoided teleporting too far ahead—partly to stay on the trail, and partly out of caution.
They couldn’t be sure whether this was just a gathering of skeletal zombies or if Tong Zhan was orchestrating things from the shadows.
Better to play it safe.
They pressed on, following the footprints as the sun dipped toward the horizon.
But even as dusk approached, their quarry remained out of reach.
"One last jump," Yun Xiaoxiao said to Lu Chen and the others. "If we don’t find them this time, I’ll go back and update the rest."
They had been gone too long already—any longer, and the others would start panicking.
Lu Chen and the others nodded in agreement.
The four vanished once more.
The moment they reappeared, the others turned to Yun Xiaoxiao.
Updated from freewёbnoνel.com.
"Anything?" Han Bing asked.
Yun Xiaoxiao tilted her head slightly, her bright eyes flickering with unease.
"I found them."
But the numbers…
Her spiritual perception was flooded with countless tiny dots.
There were tens of thousands of them—at least seventy or eighty thousand.
"They’re about a kilometer southwest of us, moving fast," she said, her expression grim.
This time, the four of them moved with even greater caution, calculating their approach carefully before creeping closer.
Behind a dune, four heads slowly peeked over the ridge.
The sight ahead left them all stunned in varying degrees.
About two hundred meters away, an enormous horde of zombies surged across the desolate desert like a tidal wave.
Half of them were skeletal zombies—far deadlier than their ordinary counterparts at the same level.
But the real problem was their strength.
The weakest among them were already at the peak of mid-tier Level 4.
And the strongest?
Four of them had reached the early stages of Level 9.
"So many high-level zombies!" Liu Xiaohui gasped, adjusting her glasses in disbelief.
Han Bing’s brow furrowed. "Where are they headed?"
Yun Xiaoxiao and Lu Chen remained silent.
Their attention was fixed on the massive, hill-like bulk of a shield zombie at the front of the horde.
Perched on its shoulder was Tong Zhan.
Dressed in gray shorts and a short-sleeved shirt, with a white cap pulled low, he sat with his back to them.
Though they couldn’t see his face, his silhouette and the aura he exuded left no doubt—it was him.
So it really was Tong Zhan.
He had actually slipped into the desert unnoticed.
And somehow, he had gathered an army of high-level zombies in secret.
Even Yun Xiaoxiao couldn’t help but wonder—how had he managed it?
But now wasn’t the time to dwell on that.
They now needed to figure out how to deal with this massive army of high-level zombies.
The menacing aura they exuded was like a horde of ancient monsters preparing to lay siege to a city.
Yun Xiaoxiao's eyes darkened—she seemed to have already guessed Tong Zhan's next move.
If they allowed him to leave the desert, human bases would be in grave danger!
But she also knew that with the limited forces they had brought this time, there was no way they could completely annihilate an army of seventy to eighty thousand high-level zombies.
Moreover, since these high-level zombies had already gathered, they couldn’t afford to let them escape easily.
If they were going to kill them, they had to wipe them all out in one go.
Eradicate the threat completely!
But to achieve this, they needed a solid plan.
This time, they absolutely couldn’t let that sociopath Tong Zhan escape again!
Yun Xiaoxiao’s gaze was as sharp as a hawk’s, glinting with a cold edge.
After discussion, it was decided that Lu Chen, along with Han Bing and Liu Xiaohui, would continue trailing Tong Zhan’s group.
They would maintain a safe distance, just close enough to keep track of them.
Meanwhile, Yun Xiaoxiao would return to Ling Jing’s side.
They would strategize and call for reinforcements!
If they were going to act, they would go all out!
This time, they had to eliminate the threat at its root!
Several months earlier...
After escaping, Tong Zhan had made his way to a small town in the northwestern frontier.
Alone, he slowly walked into the city.
The zombies inside whimpered like subjects bowing to their king, not daring to act out.
But just then, a young man suddenly fought off several zombies near Tong Zhan and dragged him away, running until they reached a hidden gathering spot in the city.
The young man thought he had saved a pitiful child.
Instead, he had welcomed a demon.
When Tong Zhan wrapped his fingers around the neck of the man who had "saved" him, he let out a chilling laugh.
"Stop pretending. I hate hypocrites like you who act all righteous."
With that, he sank his teeth into the man’s flesh.
The young man died without ever understanding what he had done wrong.
Nor did he know that because of his momentary kindness, the companions who had barely survived the horrors of zombies and mutated creatures would all perish overnight.
If only he had known...
But in this world, there were no second chances.
