Chapter 73: Subaru Vs Petelgeuse

Chapter 73 - Subaru Vs Petelgeuse

Subaru walked up to the battle with Petelgeuse, as Petelgeuse had already changed body, as Halibal cut down another member of the witch Cult, as Shaule holds back Petelgeuse.

Subaru looked as he spoke. "Move to the side".

Everyone was a bit confused, as they moved to let Subaru approced Petelgeuse, as he spoke. "You know I always wondered, who used this better".

Petelgeuse was a bit confused. "Oh and what do you mens by that hahahah".

Subaru looked as he activated [Invisible Providence] as the Invisible hands started to appear, as Petelgeuse could see them. "This, the cheap copy of the witch of Sloth Authority that you have, or the real that I got".

[Sekhmet yawn as she spoke in his head. "This gonna be interesting"]

Petelgeuse's manic grin faltered as he saw Subaru's unseen hands emerge—dozens of them, more numerous and controlled than his own.

"H-HOW?!" Petelgeuse's voice cracked with disbelief. "That is impossible! The Authority of Sloth belongs to me! I am the most diligent! The most—"

Subaru sighed, his voice laced with disappointment. "You're not even using it properly."

With a flick of his fingers, Subaru's unseen hands moved, intercepting and overpowering Petelgeuse's own. The madman struggled, his laughter turning into strained gasps as he was pinned to the ground.

[Minerva scoffed. "Brutal."]

[Pandora chuckled. "Efficient."]

Sekhmet sighed in Subaru's mind. "If you're gonna use my Authority, at least do it properly, brat."

"Then watch closely, Witch of Sloth." Subaru tightened his unseen grip, pressing Petelgeuse into the dirt. "You always talked about love, but you never understood it. You worshipped a dead dream."

Petelgeuse thrashed, his body twitching erratically. "Y-you... are truly a... a monster..."

Subaru tilted his head. "Maybe. But at least I have control."

With that, he crushed Petelgeuse's body with his unseen hands. The cultist's mouth opened in a final, silent scream—before his body twisted unnaturally, limbs breaking under the force.

As the cultist's form stilled, Halibal let out a low whistle. "Damn. Remind me never to piss you off, boss."

Subaru took a slow breath, deactivating [Invisible Providence]. He stared down at what remained of Petelgeuse, his expression unreadable.

"One more down. The Cult is weakening."

He turned to his comrades. "Burn everything. No traces left. We're not done yet."

As the flames rose higher, Subaru stepped away from the corpse. He had won.

But why did it feel so... hollow?

Subaru stopped and then his [invisible Province] stopped a different one, as he saw Petelgeuse in a different body. "So you and one more body".

Petelgeuse laughed as he spoke. "I SEE YOU REALLY ARE THE MOST LOVED, the most, hahahaha, I can finally see what will happen if a FIGHT YOU FULLY, hahahahhaha".

[Satella spoke in his head. "You knew he had an extra body, why didn't you kill it first".

Subaru spoke in his head. "I gonna dragg this fight long enough, for me to Forcefully unlock his past, at least give some closer before I fully kill him".

[Carmilla spoke in his head. "Y-you are very kind S-subaru, please d-dont forget that"]

Petelgeuse's laughter echoed as his new body trembled with excitement. His fingers twitched, unseen hands materializing once more, but this time, they moved with far more precision.

"You... YOU are the most fitting opponent! The most worthy test!" he cackled. "LET US SEE WHO IS TRULY MORE DILIGENT!"

Subaru remained still, letting the deranged Archbishop bask in his delusions.

[Satella's voice in his mind was soft. "Be careful, Subaru."]

"I know." He readied himself, gripping Witch's Edge tightly as he activated [Invisible Providence] once more.

This time, he wasn't aiming to kill right away.

He needed answers.

---

Petelgeuse lunged, his unseen hands striking like whips, aiming to crush Subaru under sheer numbers. But Subaru barely moved—his own hands countered each strike with flawless control.

Petelgeuse's grin widened. "You ARE slothful! Moving only when necessary! Efficient, calculating! YET! YOU HAVE THE NERVE TO JUDGE ME?!"

Subaru's gaze darkened. "You don't even know what you're talking about."

With a twist of his fingers, he forced one of his own unseen hands through Petelgeuse's skull—not to kill, but to delve deeper.

---

Ding!

[Authority of Sloth: Forced Memory Unlock – Activated.]

A rush of fragmented images surged into Subaru's mind.

A young man, standing in a simple robe, his face bright with hope.

A group of followers—friends—laughing together, believing in a future free of suffering.

A woman. Beautiful. Kind. His teacher, his guiding light.

She smiles at him, and his heart aches with devotion.

Then—flames. Screams. Loss.

The woman, torn apart before his eyes, as he fails to save her.

Her last words: "Stay diligent. Protect the dream."

And then, darkness. Madness.

---

Subaru stumbled back, gripping his head as the flood of emotions hit him all at once.

"Damn it..."

Petelgeuse staggered, clutching his chest as tears ran down his face. "No... no, no, no, I cannot—must not—fail...!"

He raised his hands for another attack, but Subaru didn't move to dodge.

Instead, he whispered, "Her name was Fortuna, wasn't it?"

Petelgeuse froze.

His unseen hands flickered, his whole body trembling. "H-how do you..."

Subaru took a step forward, his voice softer now. "She wouldn't want this. She wouldn't want you to become this."

Petelgeuse clutched his head, his expression twisted in agony. "NO! NO! Fortuna wanted me to protect our dream! Our future!"

Subaru shook his head. "Then why do you think she's smiling at you like this?"

With another activation of [Forced Memory Unlock], he pushed one final vision into Petelgeuse's mind—the true last memory of Fortuna.

A memory where she looked at him, not with expectation, but with love.

Not asking him to be diligent.

Not demanding he carry the dream alone.

Just... grateful.

---

Petelgeuse dropped to his knees, eyes wide, hands trembling. "No... I..."

The madness in his gaze cracked. The weight of centuries of devotion built on a misunderstanding came crashing down.

Subaru stepped closer, raising Witch's Edge. "You can rest now, Petelgeuse."

For the first time in centuries, the Sin Archbishop did not fight back.

The blade came down.

It was over.

Subaru saw his head fall of as he spoke. "I unlocked a new Authority in the middle of a fight".

[Sekhmet yawn as she spoke. "More like I gave Another one of my Authority to you"]

Subaru spoke in his head. "So, the Kuudere does care about random people".

[Sekhmet yawned again in his mind. "Tch. Don't get used to it, ya lazy bastard. I just got tired of watching you take the long route."]

Subaru smirked slightly as he felt the power settle within him.

Ding!

[Authority of Sloth: Forced Memory Unlock (100%) – Allows the user to forcibly extract and experience the memories of others, even against their will. Higher proficiency may allow selective memory manipulation.]

He rolled his shoulders, exhaling as the weight of the battle lifted. Petelgeuse's body lay still, his expression peaceful for the first time in centuries.

[Minerva sighed. "You always do this, Subaru. Even when you don't have to, you take on everyone's pain."]

Subaru's fingers tightened around Witch's Edge. "If I don't, then who will?"

He turned, looking at Halibal and Shaule, who had finished cleaning up the remaining Witch Cultists. They watched him silently, waiting for his next move.

"Let's go," Subaru said, stepping over the fallen Archbishop's body. "We have bigger fights ahead."

As he walked, he could feel the lingering presence of her.

[Satella whispered gently. "You did the right thing, Subaru."]

He didn't reply.

He just kept walking.

Subaru was in his office in the Witch's Hand HQ, as he was seating juts like a Cirten Cultivations MC, whos Noble was canceled from Webnovel do to it's then, as Subaru just had his eyes closed.

He opned them as he spoke. "Lye, Roy and Petelgeuse, 3 Archbishop died by my hand in the same day".

[Minerva scoffed in his mind. "And you sound so damn dramatic about it."]

Subaru exhaled, leaning back in his chair. "It's not about drama, it's about what comes next."

Three dead Archbishops. Three vacancies in the Witch Cult's hierarchy. It wouldn't go unnoticed.

[Pandora hummed in amusement. "Oh, it certainly won't. The other Archbishops will be very interested in you now, my dear Vainglory."]

Subaru narrowed his eyes. "Good. Let them come. I need them to."

He stood up, walking to the large map on the wall of his office. Marked locations, key figures, and potential threats were all neatly arranged.

[Echidna's voice echoed in his mind. "What's your next move, then?"]

Subaru smirked. "I'm going to make sure they don't get a chance to replace the ones I killed."

"By the time I'm done, the Witch Cult won't have a hierarchy left to rebuild."

Later that night, after Subaru had slipped back into the Roswaal Mansion and gone to sleep, he woke back in the Hanging Garden

Subaru was holding what was Petelgeuse Authority of Sloth as he looked as he spoke. "And now I have something to stabilize the Sequence 8 Potion of the Fool Pathway".

Echidna looked as she drank hee tea. "Will, yes, you do, but how will you do it".

Subaru looked at them as he spoke. "I guess, have Pandora split it in half; I absorbed the First half for my Mission, and the second half will be absorbed once I take the Fool's pathway, Potion".

Minerva then spoke. "Don't Forget, you need to make the Potion in the real world".

Subaru sighed as he spoke. "Yeah, Me and Al have gathered everything, we just needed this".

Pandora then spoke. "Your Pathway to Godhood is getting closer".

Subaru then stopped as he thought for a bit. "Godhood".

Daphne blinked as she looked at him. "Um, Lugunica to Subaru?".

Subaru was just thinking. "Just thinking of something. People who use Pathways like me or your girls become Gods, but can there be more way?".

Carmilla looked at Pandora as she spoke. "Pandora, i-i think y-you opened a door t-that shouldn't have b-been open".

Pandora chuckled, her golden eyes gleaming. "Oh, but isn't that what makes things interesting?"

Subaru exhaled, tapping the crystalized Authority of Sloth in his hand. "Godhood... It's a vague concept, isn't it? Some reach it through worship, others through sheer power. But Pathways... they're different."

Echidna sipped her tea, intrigued. "You're questioning whether divinity can be achieved without following a preordained Pathway?"

Subaru nodded. "Yeah. If Paths exist, it means there are rules. And if there are rules, there have to be exceptions."

Minerva scoffed. "You're overthinking again. Just take the damn Fool Pathway and be done with it."

Daphne tilted her head. "Buuut~ what if Subaru-chan wants to break the system?~ Wouldn't that be fun?"

Carmilla fidgeted, looking nervous. "S-Subaru, p-please d-don't do a-anything reckless."

Subaru smirked. "Relax, I'm not going to throw away my advantage. But it's a thought worth exploring. If the world operates under fixed rules... then someone has to be able to rewrite them."

Pandora smiled knowingly. "Now that is a truly interesting idea."

Subaru spoke as he remembered everything from Lord Of The Mystery. "Pathways were once created, and people had to first create them, each Pathway didn't exist until someone created them fully, with everything"

Sekhmet yawned as she spoke. "What are you planning".

Subaru then spoke. "Thinking of my making a few of my own".

Minerva choked on her water as she spoke. "ARE. YOU. INSANE".

Echidna blinked, setting her teacup down. "Creating your Pathway... Subaru, you do realize what that entails, don't you?"

Subaru nodded, his fingers tightening around the crystallized Authority. "Yeah. I'd be rewriting the fundamental laws of how divinity works. The risks are obvious."

Pandora giggled, amused. "And yet, you still want to try. How very Subaru of you."

Minerva was still fuming. "It's not just risky! It's outright impossible! Pathways weren't 'created' overnight! They were shaped by countless factors—history, beliefs, concepts that existed long before their users!"

Sekhmet yawned, eyeing Subaru. "And what makes you think you can pull it off?"

Subaru smirked. "Because I'm not bound by this world's rules. I wasn't even born here. I've already defied fate, rewritten events, and forced existence itself to accommodate my will. If there's a way to break the system, I'll find it."

Carmilla tugged at his sleeve nervously. "B-but, S-Subaru, i-if you do this... t-there might be no turning b-back."

Subaru exhaled, his golden eyes gleaming with determination. "I know. That's why I have to be sure before I take the next step."

Echidna grinned. "Then, tell us. What kind of Pathway do you envision?"

Daphne looked as she spoke. "So what, you wanna make a Pathway that is safe for other people to use?".

Subaru looked at them as he spoke. "There is no safe pathway, maybe something that doesn't lead to madness"

Echidna then spoke as she looked at him. "What do you image".

Subaru then thought as he spoke. "The first one that comes to find is something for Emilia, Ice Queen".

Echidna smirked as she spoke. "Ok, then what is the sequence".

Subaru then went quiet for a few minutes as he Spoke. "Sequence 9: Sleeping Beauty, Sequence 8: Snow White, Sequence 7: Ariel, Sequence 6: Bella, Sequence 5: Jasmine, Sequence 4: Mulan, Sequence 3: Tiana, Sequence 2: Rapunzel, Sequence 1: Merid, Sequence 0 (God Hood): Ice Queen".

Minerva deadpanned. "You just named a bunch of princesses."

Echidna chuckled, sipping her tea. "How fitting. A pathway that embodies purity, resilience, and transformation. But tell me, Subaru, what do these sequences represent?"

Subaru crossed his arms, his mind racing. "Each sequence represents a stage of growth—physical, mental, and supernatural. They aren't just random names. They embody specific abilities and philosophies."

Sekhmet yawned. "Then explain. What does 'Sleeping Beauty' do?"

Subaru smirked. "Sleeping Beauty represents latent potential, slumbering power. At this stage, the user gains an extreme affinity for ice, but their powers remain dormant until 'awakened'—perhaps through an emotional trigger."

Echidna nodded. "A strong foundation. And 'Snow White'?"

"Snow White is the step where they become more than human, gaining resistance to curses and manipulation—representing her fairy tale immunity to poison. But it also comes with the ability to command ice familiars."

Daphne tilted her head. "What about 'Ariel'?"

"Ariel marks the transformation phase—mobility and adaptability. It grants the ability to move seamlessly between different states of matter: solid, liquid, and even mist, like shifting between water and ice at will."

Minerva scoffed. "So what, 'Bella' makes you fall in love?"

"No. Bella represents inner strength and empathy. At this stage, the user develops an aura that influences emotions, helping them pacify hostility or inspire courage in allies. But it also enhances their ice constructs, turning them into something almost alive."

Pandora hummed in interest. "And Jasmine?"

"Jasmine represents regality—command over nature itself. At this point, the user can alter the weather, summon blizzards at will, and manifest weapons of pure permafrost."

Carmilla shivered. "M-Mulan?"

"Mulan is the warrior stage. A balance between might and intelligence. The user gains mastery over ice-based combat techniques, incorporating fluid motion and overwhelming force."

Sekhmet smirked. "Tiana?"

"Tiana represents willpower—the ability to break through fate itself. At this point, the user can negate attempts to alter their reality, including mind control, illusions, and even causality manipulation, as long as their resolve holds."

Echidna leaned forward, intrigued. "Rapunzel?"

"Rapunzel is the final mortal step—divine ice, eternal preservation. The user stops ageing, gains a self-regeneration factor, and can extend their influence to maintain the existence of things that should fade—whether memories, people, or even entire lands covered in ice."

Echidna's eyes glowed. "And finally... 'Merida' before reaching 'Ice Queen'?"

Subaru exhaled. "Merida represents absolute freedom. No more fate, no more shackles. The user breaks away from all outside influences—time, space, and even cause and effect struggle to bind them. It is the threshold before godhood."

Pandora laughed softly. "How poetic. And then, Ice Queen—an existence above all, ruling over eternal frost."

Echidna grinned. "You put thought into this. But tell me, Subaru... do you intend to make this pathway just for Emilia? Or will you create more?"

Subaru smiled. "One step at a time, Echidna. One step at a time."

Satella spoke looking at him. "So um, how are you gonna do this".

Echidna then spoke. "More importantly, how are you gonna keep these Pathways stable? You need a thing to keep to contain".

Subaru then thought for a bit as he spoke. "For the first one, I am still thinking about how to make them, or even how to will them into the world, as for the second one". Subaru thought for a bit as he pulled out his own Fool Pathway card he looked at it, and words came to his head. "Cards of Disorder".

Echidna raised an eyebrow. "Cards of Disorder? And what exactly are those?"

Subaru flipped the Fool Pathway card between his fingers, watching it glimmer with faint, chaotic energy. "I don't fully know yet. But if Pathways requires stability, then they need a foundation. Something to anchor them, like how Tarot Cards serve as representations of the Fool Pathway."

Pandora smirked. "So, you're saying you'll create a deck of cards that holds the essence of these new Pathways?"

Subaru nodded. "Exactly. Each Pathway will have its own set of cards—representing sequences, milestones, and maybe even potential deviations."

Sekhmet yawned. "Sounds like a pain to make."

Echidna sipped her tea. "That's an understatement. If this works, you'd be redefining the rules of this world."

Minerva folded her arms. "And you think you can make something that competes with pre-existing reality?"

Subaru smirked. "Reality is just the result of someone else's rules. So why can't I make my own?"

Satella's voice echoed softly in his head. "Subaru... this could be dangerous. If you create something too powerful—something that doesn't belong—what if the world rejects it?"

Subaru paused for a moment, then exhaled. "Then I'll just make sure it belongs. If I can define the framework, if I can set the rules, then I can make sure it doesn't collapse under its weight."

Echidna narrowed her eyes. "And how will you test this theory?"

Subaru looked down at the Fool Pathway card, gripping it tightly. "By making the first Card of Disorder... and seeing if the world accepts it."

Echidna smirked. "Trial and error? More like catastrophic failures and existential crises."

Subaru rolled his eyes. "Gee, thanks for the encouragement."

Pandora tilted her head. "You're dealing with fundamental forces, rewriting the structure of power systems. If you don't get it right, you could end up creating something unstable, something even worse than existing pathways."

Subaru sighed. "That's why I need to understand them first. Before I make something new, I have to dissect what already exists."

Minerva crossed her arms. "So what's the plan?"

Subaru looked around the Hanging Garden, at the Witches, each a holder of their own Authority, their own Pathway. "Step one—study your Pathways. Every Authority, every quirk, every weakness. Step two—replicate the foundation of a Pathway without the insanity-inducing side effects. And step three..." He smirked. "We make the first Card of Disorder."

Typhon clapped excitedly. "Ooooh! This is gonna be fun!"

Sekhmet yawned. "It's gonna be a pain, but sure, I'll watch."

Echidna grinned. "Then let's see if you can play god, Subaru."
