Chapter 38: Trial of the Forest Guardian

Chapter 38 - Trial of the Forest Guardian

The smell of moss and damp wood filled her nose.

Lillian sat cross-legged inside a crude cage made entirely of intertwined roots and branches.

Her violet eyes stared blankly at the space in front of her, as if her soul had quietly packed its bags and left the body an hour ago.

She exhaled sharply.

A leaf drifted down and landed on her head.

She didn't react.

Somewhere nearby, a bird chirped.

She still didn't react.

Then a loud boom echoed in the distance.

The cage shook. Birds took flight in a panic. Somewhere, something screamed.

Lillian blinked.

Another explosion. Louder this time.

Then—

"I'M THE CHAOS HEIR!"

Her eye twitched.

"...Oh no. I forgot about that Idiot"

She pressed her forehead to the cage bars. Peeking.

In front of her, two elven guards were panicking.

One clutched his spear backwards, like he'd forgotten which end was the pointy one. The other spun in circles, muttering gibberish.

"Hoho... haha... hohoho... hahaha—"

Another explosion boomed.

BOOM!

They both shrieked and ducked, pressing themselves flat against the ground like worms.

Lillian watched them for a long silent moment. Then said flatly, "You guys are really making me feel secure back here. Great job."

They both looked at her.

Then at each other.

And then—without any hesitation whatsoever—started hopping in place and making monkey noises.

"Ooh ooh, aah aah!"

Lillian blinked slowly, her expression a perfect canvas of deadpan rage.

"I see," she muttered. "So, you have chosen death."

From her hand, oceanic blue mana shimmered—calm, elegant, and terrifyingly cold.

The monkey noises stopped. The two guards froze mid-hop, then scrambled to grab their weapons as fast as possible.

Too late.

Lillian's fingers closed, and the mana pulsed outward in a sharp crack of frost.

The wooden cage around her froze in an instant—branches turning freezing white.

Then—shink!

She flicked her wrist.

The entire cage shattered around her like glass, shards of frozen wood scattering in all directions with a musical tinkle.

She stepped through the icy remains like a Forst queen, flickering her waist length hair.

Lillan took a deep breath of nature. Finally free

Then coughed as smoke entered her mouth, all around her, the forest was on fire. It took her few seconds figure out the culprit. Kazuki!

Lillian coughed again, waving away the smoke with an annoyed hand.

"Of course it's him," she muttered, eyes narrowing as another boom echoed through the trees.

The guards stared at her. Still frozen. Spear clutched in there very much contemplating either to run or stay here and fight her.

Lillian tilted her head, smiling sweetly.

"Well?" she said, "Aren't you going to 'ooh-ooh-aah-aah' some more?"

She took a step forward.

They both took a step backward, then took a look at each other, a silent understanding passed between. Run

They turned their heels back. Ran.

Lillian also sprinted. Her eyes—frosty purple—gleamed with fury. Gritting her teeth, she shouted:

"Like hell you're getting away with that!"

***

Kazuki squinted his eyes. The vines retreated behind the forest, from the trees a silhouette emerged.

At first, Kazuki braced himself. The chaotic elves had been totally unhinged, Raksha guy was tough already to take down with his three goons. So naturally, he assumed their so-called Guardian of the Forest would be a moss-covered, tree-hugging swamp monster.

But no.

Out stepped a silver-haired figure—young, graceful.

No—an elven goddess.

She wore sleek black thigh-high boots and a midnight dress with silver embroidery. Her silver hair flowed behind her in waves.

Kazuki blinked. Then blinked again.

"...Huh?"

She looked nothing like the chaotic elves who'd tied Kazuki and did the ritual dance around him.

Those guys wore leaves. Actual leaves.

And here stood their Guardian, looking like she'd just stepped off the cover of a fantasy RPG magazine.

"...Am I hallucinating?" Kazuki mumbled, rubbing his eyes.

She was still there. Elegantly walking toward, him with slow, deliberate steps.

Kazuki's lips turned into a sly smile. With a flirty voice, he spoke,

"Oh, elven beauty... have you come to rescue this poor, misunderstood hero?"

She stopped. Just a few steps away.

She tilted her head and looked Kazuki up and down.

Wind brushed her silver hair dramatically, then she opened her small mouth.

"You smell like unwashed fur and roasted bird sh*t."

She leaned in slightly. Her tone dropped, mocking.

"Tell me, were you raised by pigeons or just too stupid to live indoors?"

Kazuki's smile faltered.

"I—what?!"

Her eyes twinkled, as if seen some fascinating creature.

"This monkey talks."

His jaw dropped.

His dream crumbled right before his eyes.

The majestic guardian. The elegant walk. The wind-swept hair.

Gone.

All replaced by an elven goddess with the vocabulary of a drunk pirate.

He stared blankly

Why... why do all the pretty ones talk like this?

Is it me?

Is this karma?

Did I commit a sin in a past life? Was I a pigeon?

"...Women shouldn't have mouths..." he whispered, dead inside.

Suddenly, a vine rose behind him.

It whipped forward, like slithering serpent.

WHAP.

Kazuki shifted at the last second, the vine scraping against his arm and charring it.

His face winced and a pain voiced leaked out.

"—NNGH! Ow! Damn it!" Kazuki hissed, stumbling to the side and clutching his arm.

Sylthra raised an elegant brow.

"Good reflexes," she said, her voice calm and smooth. "For a monkey."

Before he could retort, another vine lashed out from the underbrush—this time from the side.

Kazuki ducked, rolled, and came up with dirt in his mouth and a bruised ego.

Sylthra raised a hand lazily, and more vines slithered from the ground like summoned serpents. They hissed, coiled, and danced around her like loyal pets eager to please her.

Kazuki took a cautious step back.

"Now hold on," he said, both hands raised. "Let's talk this out like civilized—ACK!"

Around him, more than ten vines lashed out at once, cutting through the air with a sharp, crackling sound.

Kazuki spun, ducked, and yelped as one grazed his back.

He stumbled to his feet, panting.

The vines paused, slithering lazily around him, waiting for Sylthra's next command.

She tilted her head, eyes gleaming with amusement. "Now I know the joy of watching monkey jumping around."

Kazuki stood frozen, covered in dirt. His clothes had more holes than fabric. Blood oozing out of arm, leg, back and covering her mouth.

He looked at her. Then up at the sky for a moment just admiring the peaceful and serenity.

Then back at Sylthra, who was smiling like a queen admiring peasant.

"I'm so done with her."
