Chapter 104: Ungrateful
"You're the first-year student from that time, the child of Thanatos."
Azrael nodded at the woman, and Cleopatra looked between them both.
"You've met before?"
Jennifer drank from the glass of wine she managed to bring with her.
"I interrogated him after that student was killed. I hope there're no hard feelings from that time, it was protocol."
Jennifer looked towards Azrael as she said the last part, and Azrael shook his head.
"It's fine. I understand."
Jennifer then looked around to try to spot Maddison.
"What about the girlfriend? She isn't with you?"
"Actually, she is. She's waiting for me at the bar, but Cleopatra wanted to introduce me, so…"
Azrael turned to Cleopatra curiously, and Cleopatra smiled.
"Jennifer, this is the boy I've been telling you about recently, Azrael. Azrael, this is Jennifer, my cousin."
Jennifer gave her hand to Azrael, and Azrael shook it before Jennifer spoke.
"I can see you've gotten yourself into quite the situation. Does your girlfriend know about this?"
Azrael shook his head, and Jennifer laughed.

"I'd like to see the look on her face when you tell her. It should be priceless. But I really have to go, the department has all of us working overtime on the recent murder case, and I haven't had any sleep in a few days. I need to meet Sunny and give him my gift."
Jennifer sighed, and she seemed to slouch tiredly, and Azrael finally noticed the large dark circles around her eyes and how her entire body seemed to be worn out from overworking.
The murders she was talking about had to be the one that happened at Prince Oak, and Azrael realized that he had stumbled upon a rare opportunity to find out how close the authorities were to cracking the case.
Azrael put on his most curious expression.
"Are you talking about the Black Mask that I've been hearing about in the news?"
Jennifer nodded in confirmation, and the others started to pay more attention to her, hence she spoke up.
"He's been a thorn in our side for a while now. We've been hitting roadblocks at every turn. No motives, no leads, and no common traits between the victims. It's like he murders just for the fun of it."
Cleopatra's male friend, Theo, stepped forward and spoke.
"I heard he's a child of Poseidon. Is it true?"
Jennifer shrugged.
"Well, the policeman that answered the distress call said the Black Mask used a water shield to block the bullets, but that could have been a God Aspect or an Artifact. We're only saying it was a child of Poseidon because any Artifact that can make a water shield that strong would be worth hundreds of thousands. We would've heard about something like that if it existed."
Theo laughed.
"Wow, I guess the children of darkness aren't the only criminals out there now."
Jennifer glared at him.
"Don't make jokes about this. Two of my comrades were killed by that maniac."
Theo immediately sobered up and said a quiet apology.
"What will you do… if you catch him?"
Jennifer frowned down at her wine glass, and when she looked back up at Azrael, there was an intense fire burning in her gaze.
"When we find him, I'll make sure he never sees the light of day again. Either he spends the rest of his life in prison, or I put a bullet through his skull myself."
Azrael hummed and took a drink from his glass while looking away.
The music in the room suddenly started to reduce in volume, and the lights dimmed until there was only a single light shining over a spot at the door.
Everyone's attention was drawn towards the light, and they all watched as Sunny walked into the room from the inner chambers.
"Hello everyone, and thank you for honoring my invitation. Today is a celebration of my life, so just like I do on a daily basis, I'd like you all to have fun and enjoy yourselves to your heart's content."
Applause filled the room from the many guests, and Azrael watched as another man walked out from behind Sunny. The man had blonde hair and green eyes that scanned over the crowd intelligently.
"And of course, we can't forget about our magnanimous host who made it his personal duty to ensure this event was a success. Harold Sabastine, everyone."
Another round of applause rang out among the demigods, and the blond man gave a polite smile and waved to them.
The light finally came back, and the music began to play louder as Sunny and Harold mingled with the demigods around them.
Cleopatra took Azrael by the hand and started to pull him along.
"Come on, let me introduce you to Harold."
Harold was one of the most influential demigods in the Artifact sector, and it would be beneficial for any demigod to become acquainted with him, especially if they were going to need a lot of artifacts later in life.
Azrael would gain a lot just by making himself known to Harold.
As they approached, all the demigods that were surrounding Harold slowly made space for Cleopatra to pass. Cleopatra was one of the most popular demigods at this event, and everyone knew who she was, so they didn't dare stand in her way.
Harold had been talking to a female demigod when Cleopatra approached, but once he saw her, he moved away from the girl and started to head toward Cleopatra.
"Miss Cleo, it's been far too long. I didn't think I would see you today."
Harold smiled at Cleopatra, and she returned the smile before she gestured at Azrael.
"I wouldn't have come if someone interesting hadn't piqued my interest. This here is Azrael, a friend of mine. I thought I'd introduce him to you in case you two ever met in a different setting. Azrael, this is Harold Sabastine, the Artifact Whisperer. His knowledge of artifacts is unparalleled."
Azrael didn't have the energy to mention that he wasn't actually Cleopatra's friend, and he just watched as Harold tried to play down Cleopatra's praise.
"You honor me with your praise, Miss Cleo. I still have a long way to go."
Harold finally turned to look at Azrael, and he brought out his hand to shake it.
"Azrael, it's a pleasure."
Azrael nodded and took Harold's hand.
Harold's eyes flickered towards the left, and Azrael watched as Harold's eyes narrowed into a look of shock when he saw the badge on Azrael's chest showing him as a child of Thanatos.
"I see, so you're a child of darkness. I don't meet many of you in my line of work."
"Yes, I am."
Azrael responded with curt, and Cleopatra piped in before Azrael could say anything else.
"You don't need to worry about that. He doesn't have a God Aspect."
Harold blinked at Cleopatra before his gaze turned back towards Azrael in confusion.
Azrael stared into Harold's eyes innocently, and Harold seemed to come to a conclusion in his mind as he spoke up.
"Of course, I understand. Well then, it's been a pleasure, but I must excuse myself. There are many others that I wish to meet as well. Miss Cleo, please stop by my gallery sometime later, there is much we must discuss."
Cleopatra smiled in understanding, and Harold glanced at Azrael once more with a mysterious gaze before turning and walking away.
From the brief interaction they just had, Azrael was able to figure out two things about the man known as Harold Sabastine.
The first thing was that Harold Sabastine was, in fact, Harold Javier.
And the second thing was that Harold had read his system information, and he now knew that Azrael actually had a God Aspect.
Azrael cursed internally as he turned and started to head towards where he left Maddison, but before he could go, Cleopatra stopped him.
"Where are you going?"
Azrael raised his hand back at her.
"You've introduced me to everyone you wanted to, right? I have to go."
Cleopatra frowned at Azrael's dismissive attitude. Cleopatra had done so much for Azrael over the past few days.
The clothes he was wearing, the fact that he was at this party, and even the people he was mingling with.
That was all because of her.
What person would still be this cold towards someone after they've helped them so much?
Cleopatra stepped towards Azrael.
"Wait, there's going to be a dance soon. You promised to dance with me."
Azrael shook his head.
"No, I have to go back to Maddison. I already left her alone for too long."
"You're starting to get on my nerves, Azrael. Just how ungrateful can you be?"
Cleopatra spoke in an annoyed tone, and Azrael turned around with furrowed brows and stared at her in surprise.
Did she just call him ungrateful?
"What the hell do you mean by ungrateful?"
Azrael walked up to Cleopatra. There were only a few people around them since most of the demigods were surrounding Harold and Sunny, so Azrael's next words didn't travel far.
"You came to me and told me you were interested, and I plainly told you that I wasn't. You don't get to tell me I'm ungrateful because I never asked you for any of these things. You did it all yourself!"
