Chapter 185: Chapter 185 Level 9 Agent
Sam glanced at Chen Ke and used his index and middle fingers to mimic the action of a person walking, seeking agreement with his gaze.
Chen Ke frowned, knowing the reason why Sam didn’t voice his thoughts: he feared his guess might frighten the other three survivors.
Once they returned to the subway station, these people would undoubtedly spread what they had seen and heard among the other survivors, stirring up unnecessary disturbances, whether their stories were positive or negative.
Chen Ke was very clear that Sam believed the two huge pillars in the distance were the legs of a walking giant.
But he found it hard to believe because, given the current distance and the height of the pillars, if that thing was really a person, how tall would it have to be…?
The two pillars were essentially at the horizon, quite literally standing on the skyline; even at that great distance, their upper bodies were unseen, only the legs, reaching into the clouds.
Moreover, something that big must be very heavy. If it really was a walking person, Chen Ke should be feeling vibrations from the earth by now… yet he felt nothing.
Chen Ke shook his head, rejecting Sam’s speculation, but he did not reach a conclusion of his own.
What that thing was didn’t matter. What was important was that it posed no threat to them now. That was enough to know.
“Should we go have a look?” asked the capable-looking woman, curiosity painted across her face.
“She’s right, we might find out what’s really happened here. Who knows, we might even run into someone from the Administration Bureau there,” the Mediterranean man agreed.
Sam shook his head. As a soldier, he knew well that in an unknown environment, it was best to restrain curiosity and tread cautiously to stay alive.
“If the Spiritual Ability Administration was here, Diana should have picked up their signal by now. Obviously, they’re not,” Chen Ke said.
“Her name is Diana, right?” Sam asked with a smile, his eyes revealing an indescribable meaning.
“Yes, she’s a very tough girl,” Chen Ke responded.
“Oh… are you… friends with her?” Sam asked quietly, turning around.
“Sort of, but we’re not particularly close,” Chen Ke knew what Sam was hinting at.
Sam chuckled and clapped Chen Ke’s shoulder.
“Stay focused, big guy; we’re still in the thick of trouble,” Chen Ke said with a smile.
Sam quickly nodded, briefly looking back at the other three survivors, signaling them to follow.
“We should stick to the original plan. We’ll look around this station, then go back and see what Diana says. The information she has is the only thing we can rely on now,” Sam said.
Chen Ke noticed that Sam referred to her by name, not as “the lady from the Administration Bureau.”
Chen Ke deliberately took a longer video of the distant pillars, curious about what Diana would say. As an agent of the Administration Bureau, she must have dealt with such phenomena before.
The group circled the transit station; the surrounding squares, streets, and buildings were all eerily empty, like a dead city, without even a passing bird, nothing but red dust to be seen.
Eventually, they returned to the main entrance of the station.
Since it was so quiet outside with nothing in sight, it seemed safer to call the people from below to come up, especially since signs indicated that something underground needed to be contained.
Chen Ke told Sam and the other three survivors to stay above while he quickly descended through the cleared passage to the dimly lit underground, bathed in a flashing red light.
After spending time in the bright outdoors, one’s eyes could not help but go dark when re-entering the underground flickering with dark red light.
Chen Ke saw some of the remaining survivors sitting on the steps; when there was no more space, the rest leaned against the walls, consciously keeping their distance from the subway wreckage and the bodies still inside.
Diana was nearby the subway wreckage, still attempting to contact the Administration Bureau when Chen Ke appeared at the top of the steps; everyone turned to look at him.
“Chen Ke? How is it up there?” Diana hurried over.
“It’s safe up there, but… I need to talk to you about something first,” Chen Ke moved past the crowd to approach Diana.
Diana knew that what Chen Ke was about to say was likely not meant for other people’s ears, so she took him to a corner.
“Go on, is it really bad up there? Are we… really not in the United Federation anymore?” Diana asked quietly.
Chen Ke paused to organize his thoughts and decide how to explain the situation to Diana before he began to speak.
“Things are strange, Diana, we are still in the United Federation, but not in Opportunity City. We’re in Carefree City,” he whispered.
“Carefree City…? How could…?” Diana was somewhat confused.
The surroundings were too dark for Chen Ke to clearly see Diana’s expression, but from her tone, he could tell that she was as clueless about the situation as he was.
Chen Ke, who had hoped to obtain some useful information from Diana, couldn’t help feeling disappointed.
“Besides, I didn’t see a single person in the city, it’s too quiet,” Chen Ke continued.
“Not a single person…? Have they evacuated?” Diana asked.
“Even if there was an evacuation, it definitely wasn’t a prepared one. Lots of things have been left in the streets, cars are driverless, and besides, look at this…” Chen Ke said as he took out his mobile phone and showed Diana a video he had recorded.
The video was more than ten minutes long, documenting what Chen Ke and Sam had seen and heard as they circled around the orbital transit station.
“This is so unreal… I mean… I don’t even know why this is happening…” Diana said.
“You haven’t encountered this kind of situation at the Administration Bureau? Are there any other records or anything that mention something like this, like taking the subway or a plane, then suddenly finding yourself in another city…?” Chen Ke asked.
“I don’t know, Chen Ke, even the agents at the Administration Bureau have their own ranks. I’m just a Level 2 field agent; I don’t have the clearance to freely read such secret files,” Diana shook her head, her tone apologetic.
“Level 2… What does that mean?” Chen Ke didn’t understand.
“It’s classified, Chen Ke, but I can give you a simple analogy right now. Think of the Administration Bureau as a five-star hotel with staff including waiters, cleaners, managers, chefs, and the owner. Waiters and cleaners are like the regular administrative staff who handle non-confidential matters, while agents are the chefs. There are different levels of chefs, from sous chefs to head chefs, and the higher the level, the more secrets one is privy to. I won’t even mention the managers and the owner; they definitely know more,” Diana explained.
Chen Ke knew that Diana was holding something back, such as Spiritual Energy. Both investigators and Administration Bureau agents possessed Spiritual Power, and this agent ranking was undoubtedly tied to the level of one’s Spiritual Energy.
But nonetheless, she had roughly told Chen Ke about the operating structure of the Administration Bureau, which wasn’t too different from a typical municipal unit.
“Looking at the situation optimistically, Chen Ke, it’s just that something happened that brought us to Carefree City, but something happened to this city, and the Federation has sealed it off,” Diana looked at Chen Ke.

Chen Ke nodded; he knew that this possibility was slim.
“The other possibility is bad, and it’s bad because I don’t know how bad it can get,” Diana sighed.
Using common sense, the more important and severe the information, the higher the clearance required.
If a Level 2 agent like Diana didn’t even know about it, it could only be imagined how bad it was.
“So it seems… you won’t know what those two huge pillars are all about…” Chen Ke shook his head.
“I’m sorry, Chen Ke, my father isn’t Zeus; I can’t help you fly up to ask,” Diana said with a shrug.
The two fell silent for a while, at a loss for what to do and decided to just take one step at a time.
Chen Ke described the situation to the other survivors, repeatedly warned them not to wander too far, not to think about seeking help from the County Police, not to even think about finding a car to drive home, and instructed them to be careful before leading the group up the stairs.
Chen Ke and Diana led the way out, and as Chen Ke stepped onto the final stair, he saw Sam in conversation with another Asian-looking young man, behind whom stood more than a dozen dirty-looking civilians.
“Who is he?” Chen Ke immediately became alert. In this deserted world, how had another group of people suddenly appeared?
“Don’t be alarmed, look, Diana, we’ve run into one of your colleagues,” Sam said with a smile.
With a puzzled expression, Diana turned to look at the youth.
The young man turned his head to look at Chen Ke and Diana and said, “My name is Ying Baiyi, from the FPI division of the Administration Bureau, Level 9 field agent.”
Chen Ke took a sharp breath.
