Chapter 49: Geneveive
THIRD PERSON POV:
Ariel was beyond excited to be home and see her family. Walking through the snowy streets surrounded by broken and damaged homes. Her heart ached for her people and all the losses she knows they’ve suffered. She hadn’t from her family in months, the trade routes have been disrupted, and paper has become expensive, so it makes sense their resources went to repairs vs writing. The reception was bad out here, so phones were almost useless. Writing with animal curriers were the most efficient. But with the rogues targeting trade routes and here, it’ probably hard to come by, maybe the rogues have been stealing the mail too. She knew there was a good reason there’s been silence for so long.
She arrived at her front door, her house was still in pretty decent condition, considering many of the other structures weren’t very sound. She let out a breath she didn’t even know she was holding.
Opening the door, the smell of warm deer stew consumed her nose. It was hung in a pot above the fireplace. Her home was humble, not lacking but nothing glamorous. The sound of heavy thundering footsteps echoed from upstairs. They sped toward Ariel and around the corner running from upstairs was a little blue haired child, her messy buns flopping as she bounced with excitement down the stairs.
"Big Sister!" The little girl shouted.
"Evie!" Ariel opened her arms, and the little girl jumped in them.
"I didn’t know you were coming home! Oh my gosh, big sis, did you come with the Alpha King!" Evie asked.
"I did; I came with him AND guess who else, little gossip mongrel." She teased her little sister.
"WHO?!" Little Evie shouted with enthusiasm.
"The one and only Vampire Princess." Ariel whispered.
The little girls eyes shot up so big, she was shocked silent for a moment.
And then the small child in Ariels arms shrieked louder than a banshee.
"You mean THEE Vampire Princess is in our pack right now!" She yelled.
Ariel laughed, hard, at her baby sister’s enthusiasm.
For their little village, having any type of celebrity was a huge excitement for them.
Her little sister knew everything there was to be known, at least from their small corner of the world, about all the different species and their royals. She dreamed of going to a fancy school like the royals. She studied hard and was the smartest girl in their village, even at just 6, she could read whole books and do multiplication.
The only was someone from her part of the world could get into one of those schools, was if she had outstanding talent.
She had read about the vampires, though there wasn’t much, she knew about their strength and the war that happened centuries ago. Ariel would send books from the capital to her. They were the little girls prized possessions. While other girl her age played with dolls, she read books about the world. She dreamed of bigger things for herself even though she was so young.
"Yes, Evie, the one and only." She confirmed with a smile on her face.
"Is she pretty?" The girl looked at her starry eyed.
"Honestly, she looks like moonlight itself. She’s powerful too! I watched her set a man on fire once because he was very bad guy who did bad things to other girls." Ariel confessed. Though she was still weary of Odette, she wouldn’t deny her ethereal beauty to her little sister.
"Woah! That’s incredible! She’s so brave, I wanna be like her! Beautiful and powerful!" Evie smiled like she had a goal and life and was ready to dive in headfirst to that dream.
Ariel bit down, she wasn’t sure how she felt about that. But a beautiful and powerful woman, she could get behind that.
Ariel worked so she could get her sister into one of those schools. Despite her skeptical and sarcastic exterior, she was a softy. At heart she was a small-town family girl.
"Can I meet her? Please!" She gave Ariel the best pout she could manage.
Ariel wasn’t confident the princess would meet with her little sister, but from what she’s seen, the princess isn’t a disconnected from the world and doesn’t think low of the other low borns that she worked with. Even with the Alpha Kings favor, she still gave them all acknowledgement.
"I’ll talk with the princess and see if she has the time, but there’s no guarantee, just know that so don’t get your hopes up." Ariel couldn’t handle seeing that kind of disappointment, she’d probably never give the girl another chance. Odette would be the enemy in her eyes.
"Oh, Thank You, big sis! Oh, I hope she says yes!" The Evie said excitedly.
Releasing her sister now she asked, "Genevieve, where’s mum?"
"Probably the pack house, getting ready for the dinner thing the alpha is doing for the Alpha King." Evie explained to Ariel.
She remembered they were doing the party tonight, she could ask the princess then.
"I’ll be back after the dinner tonight, the alpha king has allowed me to stay home, while we’re here visiting." Ariel had to leave; she had just stopped in to say hello to her family and drop her things off. Her absence would be noticed if she stayed much longer. Ariel gave her sister another big hug, kissing her on the top of her head. She waved by and headed back to the pack house.
When she arrived, there was a group of people huddled outside whispering.
Somehow, she knew this had something to do with their princess hostage.
"What’s going on?" Ariel asked.
One wolf turned to her and said, "There was a fight, and the healer had to be fetched, so it must have been pretty serious."
Ariel instantly became worried and rushed past the crowd. When she reached the door, her path was blocked. "No civilians allowed in right now."
"I’m not a damn civilian, I’m with the royal party, and I’m the vampire princess’s personal maid. Tell me, soldier, do you want to answer to the Alpha King for denying his princess her personal maid after she was in a fight? Hmm?" Ariel sharp tongued as ever, knew exactly what to say.
"Fine." The soldier said stepping aside.
Ariel ran through the halls and found Beta Damon standing with another soldier talking and staring. She walked over to them and follow their gaze.
Her hands quickly shot up, covering her mouth.
"Oh my!" A hole in the wall lead to another room and a she-wolf laid motionless on the floor. Blood pooling around her. A healer stood over the unconscious wolf.
"Beta Damon, what happened?" Ariel spoke quietly, like if she spoke too loudly she’d get someone in trouble.
"A stupid she wolf bit off more than she could chew." He answered.
"You mean... She did that?" Ariel asked shocked.
"Apparently, according to the camera, with one kick." Beta Damon said with amazement in his eyes.
"Fuck."
