Chapter 50: Winning the Darwin Award

Chapter 50: Winning the Darwin Award

ODETTE’S POV:

"Why can’t you just listen? Why must you cause trouble everywhere you go?" Ambrose was yelling at me. But not with the usual anger and spite.

No, this time. It was with the kind of frustration that comes from having one bad thing happen after another.

The kind that came with waking up and instantly stubbing your toe and then spilling your cup of coffee all over yourself and the floor, all just before your sink explodes when you turn it on to clean the coffee mess on the ground.

That kind of frustration.

"I’m sorry, it was just stifling in here. This room hasn’t been used in a while, its dusty and stale." I confessed half of the truth. Leaving the fact, I was ridiculously sexually frustrated and needed some cold air to cool me down.

"I don’t care; I don’t think you get it." He slammed his hands down on either side of me, pinning me between him. Stress lines etched his face like war paint.

"You just don’t understand the pressure I’m under." He spoke with anger, and even though I flinched. I could tell his anger; it wasn’t directed at me. I can’t explain how I knew, how I could tell the difference. I just could.

"I brought a fucking vampire into a wolfs den, and I can’t control her. Do you know what that says about my capabilities as the Alpha King? If I let someone who should be my pet, disobey me in front of others, what’s that to say about me? That I’m weak!"

I closed my eyes and braced for something for angry, more violent. But he didn’t he pushed himself off the wall releasing me from his oppressive alpha aura.

And raked his hands across his desk, shoving everything off it.

"Do you know what I’m trying to accomplish here? Do you have any idea of what you could have started had that wolf been someone other than a measly omega with something to prove? If that had been someone important." He screamed gripping his hair and pulling on it.

"I’m sorry." I whispered quietly. I knew saying much more than that right now, it could be too much, and it could send him over the edge again.

"Can you please, just fucking listen while we’re here. I have people I need to protect. Ariel, she’s from here, she’s someone who needs my protection. Her family. They are all my people." He yelled but, it was a pleading yell. One made of desperation.

"Okay." I mumbled barely above a whisper. "I promise."

He turned his head sharply and looked at me and lifted his eyebrow.

Disbelief was spelled on his face, "Are you seriously making it that easy?"

I fidgeted a bit, "Yes, I am a royal too. Despite being your captive, pet." Using his words against him. "I’m a princess, I know what it means to present a united and controlled front to quell ideas of rebellion and disobedience. I understand the need to keep the people you care about safe."

He walked over to me, and I felt like he was undressing me with his gaze, and not my clothes, no, the layers I built around myself and my heart.

My heart thundering harder with each step he took to get closer.

My breath hitched. He walked like he courted death.

And me, I felt like I was the death he courted.

A wave of desire washed over me again.

"Is that so?" His words laced with seduction.

I gulped and whispered "Yes, seems so."

He leaned in closer, his breath brushing the tip of my ears "Well good, I need your help reviewing some documents. Show me your royal skills again, would you?"

This. Mother. Fucker.

Heat from embarrassment rushed to my cheeks.

What was I thinking? Ugh.

"I’d be honored to do your homework for you, my king" I dragged the word out and laced it with sarcasm.

"Good, my beta Damon will be bringing them in." Ambrose gave me a smug smirk.

That stupid. Annoying. Sexy smirk.

I hated it.

AMBROSE’S POV:

When she just agreed so fragrantly without fight, or any snarky sarcastic remarks. I was pleasantly shocked.

And then when she mentioned her understanding of this kind of business, I got an idea. She can help me sort through the documents and find what I’m looking for. Find the slip up I know one of these traitors left.

Her sharp eyes, they would be my weapon. Together we would take these corrupt, rot festering alphas down. I just needed the evidence, and I had no doubt I’d find it.

Together?

What?

Nothing.

I knew what he was doing. Taunting me, because I changed my mind.

It’s not what you think it is, Onyx.

Whatever lie you want to tell yourself, Ambrose.

I ignored him. I had more important things to do than to argue with my wolf about ’feelings’.

Beta Damon knocked at the door "Come in"

"I brought the documents you asked for, and I brought Ariel, instead of Emalea, she was right there, I figured convenience and efficiency mattered to you more." Damon spoke with the formality expected of a bet on official business.

I took a seat at the desk and split the stack of paper up between Odette and I. I hand her the pile, and she takes it over to the bed.

"Can I please get a calculator, pen and paper?" She asked casually. I nodded and handed it to her.

She tucks herself in sitting crisscross and devoted all her attention to information in front of her. She instantly became engrossed and there would be no disturbing her until she found what she was looking for. At first, I just watched her as she read through every single word and every number. I watched her furrow her brows when she read something she didn’t like, how she’d bite her lip and tap her pen on her jaw mindlessly when she was questioning something. How hard her fingers would type on the calculator. She was determined and focused. Her dedication to helping with finding the corruption, for people she’s been raised to hate, people who hate her. She’s doing this, not for me, not because I told her too, but because it’s the right thing to do.

And that meant everything.

"Ha! You sneaky sons of bitches. I got you now." She shouted startling me.

"What did you find?"

"Let me see your pile, and then I’ll show you." She asked never looking up from the documents spread out on the bed, she simply held her hand out, expecting me to deliver them to her.

Which, I did.

She snatched the papers and started skimming them, having a clear idea of what to look for. She didn’t notice Damon who walked in and stood staring with me.

Odette froze. A smile crept up her cheeks "Gotcha." She shouted "He’s been stealing money and funneling it into gambling."

Gambling? Damon and I looked at each other and looked back.

"Yes." She insisted handing me the documents colored in red pen mark.

"How can you tell it’s gambling?" I looked at the paperwork and it looked normal to me.

"Here, you see this name here? This is the name of my Mammy’s casinos. She missed my graduation because she was sorting out some shit that went down." She said pointing at a name.

"The Black Wood? Sounds like a place for lumber. Not like a casino." I was skeptical, who would call a casino something so... so... ridiculous.

"You know what it references?" She looked puzzle, like it’s something I should know.

"It refers to the dark woods in hell. One of her domains is what earth dwellers call the dark woods, or by the residence in hell, The Black Woods. Because nothing green can grow there. It’s a forest that feeds off the dead." She answered. "He’s been gambling online at the casino owned by my great-grandmother... and by the looks of these numbers, he’s not good at winning."

"He’s winning the Darwin Award." I joked.

It took her a second to catch on because at first, she looked confused and then her face lifted, and she busted out with the kind of laugh someone would kill to listen too.

"I guess our Alpha here will be eating dinner in a different seat tonight."
