Chapter 34: Mingzhu was in another fight.
Jun Meilin could not help thinking that she could not catch a break, Mingzhu’s school had called when they were leaving the government office. Apparently, her feisty daughter had managed to get herself involved in another scrape. It was the third one in this year alone.
On arriving at the school with Jingzhe, they were taken directly to the principal’s office. Meilin found her stubborn daughter standing near the corner, her arms crossed across her chest and the look in her eyes as fierce as that of a little lion cub. On her face were a few scratches and on the back of her right hand, a fresh wound that not been treated.
Her opponent was a young boy, her classmate that Mei Mei recognized. He had one of the loudest mothers in the school, a woman that loved being the center of attention.
The boy’s wounds had already been tended to, on both arms were small plasters. His nose was swollen, as was one of his eyes. From first appearance alone, it was easy to guess who had won the fight. Mei Mei had only lost one fight in her life, she was three back then and her opponent was a five year old.
"What is our defense here?" Jingzhe whispered to her.
Hardly had Mei Mei formulated her thoughts when Mrs. Fang started the shouting match at the top of her voice.
"You have finally come Meilin, very good. See what your wild daughter has done to my precious Bao Bao. She almost broke his nose and ripped out his eye. This is why I was against Bao Bao being in the same class as that street fighter...."
Mei Mei turned around and approached Mingzhu, blocking out most of Mrs. Fang’s screaming.
"Sweetie, are you hurt?"
Mingzhu shook her stubbornly, her lips set firmly in a thin line.
"Does it hurt?" Jingzhe squatted down next to Mei Mei, he reached out to Mingzhu to take a look at her hand. "It looks like it hurts."
Mrs. Fang did not take kindly to being ignored, she marched over to them and touched Mei Mei’s shoulder. Mei Mei stood up abruptly and shoved Mrs. Fang backwards. "You can talk without putting your hands on me."
Mrs. Fang was not too pleased to be shoved away like that, she looked at the principal and the homeroom teacher, huffing and laughing angrily. "Did you see that?" she asked. "It is as they say, when the top is crooked the bottom is bound to be the same. Principal Chen, I want that wild thing expelled...."
Mei Mei grabbed her hand and threw it at Mrs. Fang. "Wild thing! You dare to call my daughter a wild thing. Fang Ning do not mistake my calm and polite demeanor for weakness. I am like this simply because I do not want to frighten the children.
Do you think that you have the upper hand simply because you have the loudest voice? Do you think that you are a cockatoo and you must shout in order to communicate?"
While she was saying this, the shocked homeroom teacher retrieved the bag and returned it to Mei Mei.
Mrs. Fang opened her mouth and closed it twice, the thick red lipstick she had applied added more drama to her outraged reaction.
"Cockatoo!! You, Jun Meilin did you just call me a cockatoo?" She turned to the homeroom teacher and asked, "What is a Cockatoo?"
The homeroom teacher was taken aback by the question, she looked at the two mothers and then the flabbergasted principal. Rather than answer the question, she decided to calm the mothers down.
"Mama Mingzhu, mama Bao Bao, why don’t you both take a sit first? As the adults, you must both set an example by being rational, the children are watching and learning from you. We are all friends here..."
"Friends!!" Mrs. Fang roared.
Mei Mei did the rational thing, she returned to Mingzhu and Jingzhe’s side and they sat down. Their eyes remained on Mrs. Fang who was still shouting dramatically. It almost seemed like she was looking for a fight. Unfortunately for her, Mei Mei did not respond in kind and she looked back at the woman with ridiculing eyes.
Soon, Mrs. Fang run out of gas because no one was responding to her shouts, it made her more uncomfortable than everyone else in the room and she chose to sit down eventually.
Principal Chen was relieved when the yelling stopped. He had been dreading meeting Mrs. Fang as soon as Bao Bao brought into his office with a swollen nose and a black eye. Mrs. Fang could scream for an hour without being exhausted. This was actually considered a lucky day because she had screamed for thirty five minutes.
Yes, principal Chen had been timing it. As ridiculous as it was, the school recorded things like these in order to help teachers know how to handle every parent according to their personality.
He was also going to have to include Jun Meilin’s bag throwing behavior. He had seen the post made by the mighty little peepstar. She had thrown a bag at her husband this morning and in the afternoon, she had thrown it at Mrs. Fang. Teachers would have to be on the lookout for her bag from now on.
Principal Chen cleared his throat and prepared his best moderation voice. "Now that everyone is calm, we can begin this disciplinary meeting. Two students, Mingzhu and Bao Bao got into a fight during lunch." He flipped through the papers on the desk where details of the fight had been included.
This also included testimonies from other children that witnessed the fight.
"According to witnesses, Mo Mingzhu threw the first punch."
Mei Mei looked at her daughter and Mingzhu reacted as expected, she turned her nose up in the air and sought refuge in Jingzhe’s arms.
Principal Chen craned in his head and titled it to the right to get a closer look at the little assailant. "Mo Mingzhu are you finally willing to share with us why you punched Bao Bao___, I mean Bao Long?"
Mo Mingzhu buried her head deeper in Jingzhe’s chest.
"What is there to explain, that wild...." Mrs. Fang had started off with a renewed fire but she stopped when she saw the glare Mei Mei was sending her way. "That Mingzhu fights all the time. Who doesn’t know this? She has already beaten up half of the children in her classroom this term alone."
"If she was guilty of starting trouble, she would have been expelled a long time ago. All those kids were found guilty of aggravating her. I am willing to bet that your son did the same thing." Mei Mei responded calmly.
Mrs. Fang was unwilling to accept that her son had started the trouble. She was even more unhappy about he fact that her son had lost the fight against a girl, one that was shorter and smaller than him. She shot a nasty side eye at Mingzhu’s head. What the hell were they feeding that Mo Mingzhu at home, she wondered.
