Chapter 53: Voices Across Distance
Chapter 53 - 53: Voices Across Distance
The town hall was full again. Goblins sat on benches, dwarves leaned against walls, and Caelen stood in front of them all, holding a small notebook.
He took a deep breath. "Okay. I have a new idea. Something we've never had before. It's called... a telephone."
Silence.
Dorgrim raised an eyebrow. "A what now?"
Caelen smiled nervously. "A telephone. It lets you talk to someone far away. You speak into it here..." He tapped the air. "...and they hear you over there."
One of the young goblins squinted. "That sounds fake."
Zira tilted her head. "Is it magic?"
"No," Caelen said. "It's not magic. It's science. It works using copper wire, sound waves, and a power source. Like how the steam drill works—but for voices."
Elira frowned. "So... I can yell at Zira from a mile away without walking?"
Caelen chuckled. "Pretty much, yeah."
Garin scratched his beard. "You trying to start another one of those human machines again?"
"Maybe," Caelen said. "But imagine if this works. We could place one in the guard tower, one in the mine, even one in the forest camps. Instant talking, no running around."
A goblin in the back mumbled, "Sounds like telepathy."
Zira nodded. "Not exactly. But similar idea. You speak, they hear. No waiting."
Borin grinned. "Alright, now I'm curious. How does it work?"
Caelen stepped closer, holding up a quick sketch. "Here's the idea. Two boxes, each with a speaker and a wire inside. You talk into one, the vibrations travel through the wire, and the other side plays it back."
Ren Laen leaned forward. "Can it work without magic?"
"Yes," Caelen said. "But we'll need copper, iron, wood, and something to power it. Maybe a crystal, or a crank."
Dorgrim let out a low whistle. "This... is either madness or genius."
"I'll take both," Caelen said with a smile.
Borin laughed. "Then let's make a plan. You and me."
They sat at the table. Caelen explained everything he could remember. Borin scribbled fast, adding his own notes. "We can use copper from the mine. I'll need help shaping thin wire."
"I'll handle that," Dorgrim said.
"But we need a team to get materials," Caelen added. "Not just ore—we need wood, rare herbs, and maybe crystals too."
He opened his system.
[Create Group: Resource Team]
[Assign Leader: Zira]
[Assign Vice Leader: Elira]
[Add Members: Goblins x12]
Zira raised her hand slowly. "You really trust me to lead this?"
Caelen met her eyes. "I always have."
She blinked, then smiled slightly. "Alright. What do we need?"
Caelen pulled out a map and marked a few zones. "Try the east ridge. We've seen copper there. Look for any weird rocks too. Bring back anything shiny, colorful, or heavy. We'll sort it later."
Elira leaned over his shoulder. "What about danger?"
"Should be low," Caelen said. "But take weapons. You two know how to handle it."
"I'll take Noro and Hiri with us," Zira said. "Let them carry and learn."
Elira rolled her shoulders. "Let's make it quick then."
Caelen smiled. "Thank you."
Zira nodded. "Don't worry. We'll come back with half the forest if we have to."
As the team gathered supplies and left the town, Caelen turned back to the workbench.
Borin and Dorgrim were already drawing the first blueprint.
"This is going to change everything," Borin muttered.
Caelen watched them for a moment, then sat by the window.
One step at a time, he thought.
From voice to wire...
From idea to connection.
And soon, they might hear each other—no matter where they were.
