Chapter 54: Sparks of Progress

Chapter 54 - 54: Sparks of Progress

Leaves crunched under their boots as Zira pushed through the brush. Elira followed behind her, wiping sweat from her forehead.

"You sure this is the spot Caelen marked?" Elira asked, glancing around the thick trees.

Zira nodded. "Yeah. Look, there's copper in that ridge."

Two young goblins rushed forward, one holding a wooden pickaxe. "We'll get it, Captain Zira!"

"Careful," Zira said. "If the ground looks loose, don't climb it. Just dig near the edges."

The goblins nodded and got to work. Behind them, others searched the forest floor for herbs and shiny stones. Some carried small sacks already half full of weird mushrooms and colorful roots.

Elira knelt beside a bush and tugged out a bright blue herb. "No idea what this is, but it smells like metal."

Zira opened a satchel and held it out. "Toss it in. If it burns our skin later, we'll blame you."

Elira grinned. "Fair."

By midday, their bags were stuffed. Copper nuggets, herbs, odd stones, and even one red crystal the size of a goblin's fist.

"That's it," Zira said. "If we carry any more, we'll tip over."

The goblins groaned but agreed.

They began the hike back, moving through the trees in a long line. The younger ones kept asking if they'd get to eat soon. Zira just told them they'd get soup if they didn't drop anything.

When they reached the edge of the village, the sun was low. Smoke rose from chimneys, and the clang of the blacksmith echoed faintly. They passed the new houses, the farms, the golems standing like silent giants. And in the center, the town hall waited.

Inside, Caelen stood by a table filled with parts—copper wires, gears, glass shards, and a few wooden frames. Borin and Dorgrim flanked him, both holding blueprints.

"We run the wire like this," Caelen explained, tracing a line. "Speaker goes here, wrapped in copper coil. The handle crank turns this... and the sound transmits through wire."

Dorgrim grunted. "What's the power?"

"Maybe crystal, maybe crank. If we can find a steady energy source, it'll work better."

Borin scratched his head. "We'll need fine tools. And steady hands. I can shape the wood, but the copper wire's delicate."

"We can stretch it in the forge," Dorgrim said. "Flatten first, then spin it around a nail. Not perfect, but it'll work."

Caelen nodded. "We test with a short line first. Then we try long-distance."

The door creaked open.

Zira stepped inside, brushing leaves from her shoulder. "We're back."

Elira followed with a bag over each shoulder. "And we brought half the forest with us."

The goblins entered behind them, dropping their bags one by one on the floor. Some of them collapsed on the benches, panting.

Caelen walked over with a smile. "Glad you're safe." freewёbnoνel.com

"We didn't run into anything," Zira said. "Just squirrels."

"Terrifying," Elira said with a smirk. "One looked at me funny."

Caelen chuckled and knelt beside the bags. He carefully sorted through them, pulling out copper, smooth herbs, and one oddly round stone.

"What's this?" he muttered.

Zira leaned over. "No idea. It was buried deep under the moss."

Caelen turned it in his hand. It was heavy—too heavy for its size. Silver-gray, but with a darker sheen than iron. He tapped it against the table. It made a sharp, high-pitched ring.

His eyes narrowed.

"This... this might be tungsten."

Dorgrim's head snapped up. "Tungsten?"

Caelen nodded slowly. "It's one of the strongest metals I know. Hard to melt, super durable. If this really is tungsten... it's huge."

Borin stepped closer. "You sure?"

"I'll test it later. But yeah. This is rare. Even on Earth."

Zira crossed her arms. "What can we use it for?"

Caelen smiled. "Filament."

Elira blinked. "What's that?"

Caelen pointed at a drawing on the wall. "In the telephone, we need a thin wire that resists heat and lasts long. It's what carries the sound properly. Tungsten's perfect for that."

Zira raised an eyebrow. "So... it's voice metal?"

"In a way, yeah," Caelen said.

Borin laughed. "Then I'm glad you two went out there."

Caelen looked up at Zira. "Nice work."

She didn't say anything, but her ears twitched slightly, and she gave a small nod.

"Alright," Caelen said, standing up. "Let's start building."

Everyone moved at once. Dorgrim took the metal to the forge. Borin grabbed wood and began cutting frames. Elira helped lay out the herbs for later study, while Zira sat with Caelen to list what else they'd need.

The room buzzed with motion, voices, and purpose.

In that moment, the village felt more alive than ever.

And Caelen, holding a strange metal in his hand, felt one step closer to connecting everyone—not just in the village, but across the whole forest.
